usb coupler instead of camera connection kit

Rather than using the lightning to usb camera connection kit to attach a midi controller to my ipad mini with retina, I am attempting to recreate that adapter by simply putting a usb female to female coupler on the end of my lightning cable. I then just plug my midi controller's usb cord into that. It does not work and I am trying to figure out why. What is the camera connection kit doing other than adapting from lightning to a standard usb port?

I tried talking to apple support about this but they answered so quickly and with the typical "only use apple products" response that I'm not convinced they understood my question.

Thank you.

Hi. Further, the signals in the lightning connector are not USB signals. When you connect to a charger, you're just using the power lines, which are the same. When you connect to a computer, you use an Apple driver on the computer that handles the connection. To allow the camera adapter to connect to normal USB devices, there's probably a micro-controller chip in the adapter to handle the protocol.
