How do I revert to the normal size Mail frame after using Zoom in the Window dropdown item? Using the small arrows at the border shrinks the Window but deletes lateral portions of the message list screen. Also, the same Zoomed effect remains when I then use Safari--when I shrink the panel, lateral portions of the Zoomed item are cut leaving the large central portion intact in the "Zoomed" article.

It seems to me like choosing Window > Zoom is the same as double-clicking the title bar of the window? So choosing Window > Zoom again should revert back to the previous state.
Your recommendation partially works, enough that i can see the desktop image around the sides. But when I use the frame margin arrows to shrink the pix, from the right it cuts off part of the pix; when using the left margin arrows it also shrinks but still by cutting off the right side leaving the left sidebar intact, as well as leaving the zoomed gaps in the center.
Zoom is supposed to toggle between two window states:
1) The smallest size window that will hold all of the contents. However, this sometimes fills the entire screen, now.
2) A user defined window size.
If the user defined window size is too large, make it the size you want. Subsequent Zoom actions will toggle between that size and the 1).
Almost there, thanks. All you said does work, except trying to get to my user defined window size leaves a two inch empty gap on the right. When I move the right side border left it leaves the gap to the right of the Mailbox window and cuts off data from the other ones, e.g., From, Date Received, etc. The sidebar remains intact.
I think I understand what you are describing, but I don't know what is going on. Sometimes a restart will fix weird things like this.
If a plain restart doesn't work, try Safe Mode and then restart normally. That will clear some system caches.
