Setting up new Apple TV as HomeKit hub

Having just purchased the new Apple TV it seems Impossible to set it up as a HomeKit hub. Follwed all instructions, tried everything people suggest on the web but to no avail. The HomeKit option simply does not show up in the Apple TV menu. Extremely dissatisfied with this Apple product, having a home full of Apple things that work well you would expect this to work ok straight out of the box but sadly not. Will try again tomorrow but if it doesn't work it'll be going back to the shop on Wednesday...

I run into the same hassle as some of the others: new 4th gen Apple TV, 3 HomeKit devices, one iPhone, one iPad. And I followed strictly the guide given by Apple (Automate and remotely access your HomeKit accessories - Apple Support). But neither does the HomeKit entry appear on Apple TV nor on iPad.

I resetted the iPad to factory default, redone the installation. Did not work.

I logged off and in my iTunes-account multiple times. Did not work.

I backed up the iPhone and the iPad, logged both off from iTunes, resetted the Apple TV, logged into iTunes only on Apple TV. Did not work.

I logged into iTunes again on iPhone and iPad. Did not work.

I've done that cycle two times, with different waiting times in between. Did not work.

What the heck is going on?

Wait a minute. Let me try to attach one of the HomeKit accessories to my iPhone only for testing. Before I kick out all this expensive garbage into the bin.

Plug-in-connector (Parce-Plus) was connected to iPhone. Plug could be switched on and off from iPhone.

Great!

Now the HomeKit-hub again.

What's that? It has appeared silently in the Apple TV. Suddenly it was there. Right after the moment I have connected the first accessory with Home-network.

APPPLE! WHY CAN YOU NOT TELL THAT THERE MUST BE AT LEAST ONE ACCESSORY CONNECTED TO ENABLE A HUB???

OMG, I do not know whether I should be excited about the final success or really angry that I have spend hours of my life-time for a product which is provided with insufficient absolutely mandatory information.

Hi Cooperdog77,

Congratulations on the new Apple TV! I understand you are wanting to set up the HomeKit Hub, but it isn't showing up in the Apple TV menu. I'll be happy to provide some information for you. I know you stated that you have followed all instructions, but I'm going to list some information. If you have already done any of these steps, feel free to skip that particular step.

Automate and remotely access your HomeKit accessories

Set up your home hub

You can set up your iPad or Apple TV (4th generation) as a home hub to automate and remotely control your HomeKit accessories from your iOS device. The device you set up as a home hub must remain in your home, connected to your home Wi-Fi network, and powered on.

Set up Apple TV as a home hub

  1. On your iOS device or Mac, set up two-factor authentication for your Apple ID. Then go to iCloud and make sure that you have iCloud Keychain turned on.
  2. On your Apple TV, go to Settings > Accounts and make sure that you're signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID as your iOS device.
  3. After you sign in to iCloud, your Apple TV automatically sets itself up as a home hub. To check the status of your home hub, go to Settings > Accounts > iCloud and look under HomeKit to see if your home hub is connected. Learn what to do if you don’t see HomeKit.

Want to check the status of your home hub in the Home app on your iOS device? Open the Home app and tap in the upper-left corner. Then look under Home Hubs to see if your home hub is connected.

Get help with your home hub

If you have issues creating automations or controlling your HomeKit accessories when you're not home, follow these steps:
1. Make sure that your Apple TV or iPad is:

2. Make sure that you can control your accessories in the Home app on your iOS device. Open the Home app and turn on a light or change the temperature.
3. Make sure that your device is set up as a home hub:

  • On your Apple TV, go to Settings > Accounts > iCloud and make sure that your Apple TV shows HomeKit as Connected. If you don’t see HomeKit, then your Apple TV isn't connected as a home hub.
  • On your iPad, go to Settings > Home and make sure that Use this iPad as a Home Hub is turned on.

4. Restart your Apple TV, iPad, and iPhone.
5. Wait a few minutes. If you still need help, sign out of iCloud on your Apple TV, then sign back in. Go to Settings > Accounts > iCloud.
If you have an Apple TV (3rd generation)*, you can control your HomeKit accessories in the Home app while you’re away from your home. To change user permissions, create automations, or stream HomeKit-enabled cameras remotely, you need an Apple TV (4th generation). If you add an Apple TV (4th generation) to a home that has an Apple TV (3rd generation) set up, the Apple TV (3rd generation) will stop being used for HomeKit remote access.
*Apple TV (3rd generation) doesn't support remote access to HomeKit-enabled cameras.

Thanks for the reply but none of that works. Spent two days trying and nothing. Quite frankly this is the worst bit of kit Apple have produced, it's going back for a refund tomorrow, along with the two controllers I purchased with it. This was meant to be a great Christmas present for my partner but has been nothing but trouble. Thank you for nothing Apple, I shall think twice in future before purchasing any more Apple products...

No Im trying to setup a 4th gen Tv. It really is hopeless, HomeKit still not showing up. Still thinking about taking it back but we've made additional purchases to go with it. HomeKit in general is crap, trying to invite my other half so they can use the hue lights with Siri and that won't work either. Apple have seriously gone down this past year, think I might have to dump HomeKit for a more expensive but reliable option...
