black screen

Getting black screen after software update to Sierra. Booted into safe mode where I can vaguely see my desktop in the background, entered password and it boots right back to black screen.

I have what sounds a similar problem. Was fine until I logged out. Then when I log in it goes to a blank screen. Can with the track pad briefly get mission control to show. Notifications are showing but the desktop and all apps are black. I power cycled my Mac mini and used the Guest account, its working fine. Was able to create a new admin user and it works fine. Looks like some form or profile corruption of the user that did the last OS/Application update.

I have this problem after sierra 10.12.2 update. Boots to black screen, after a while normal screen appears without menu bar. Apple support went through all the motions and re installed sierra but still same problem. After leaving the mac on for a couple of days the menu bar appears by magic and all seems well. After a power failure back to black screen etc etc, left it on for a few days and hey presto menu bar back and in business. I will try your idea of a guest account before it goes into the shop. I have lost all confidence in it.

Ok guys, what I had to do what **** down the computer and power it back on holding ctrl+R once you hear the power on chime. Hold it until the apple comes on the screen. This will boot you into utilities mode. You will have 4 options there, "time machine" to load a previously saved image, "install a new OS" which allows you to reinstall Sierra, "disk utility" and some other option I can't remember:). I chose to reinstall Sierra. When it was completed downloading and install the screen will appear black for some time but eventually my screen went away and my desktop showed. There was a significant lag for a while and tiling on a lot of functions but eventually it settles in and works fine. If this doesn't work I've seen people say to boot into safe mode by holding down the shift key during at the beginning of boot and logging into your profile if you have one then restarting can help as well. Do remember, Apple phone support is free as well to all Apple customers so if you're having trouble and none of these methods help CALL THEM its FREE.
