Messages Going to Junk Mail Even Though Junk Mail Filtering is Off

Some of my @icloud.com messages are ending up in my Junk Mail folder (Mac Mail on desktop and on iPhone). Junk filtering is off. In the junk mail folder on the desktop each message has a header that says: "Mail thinks this message is Junk Mail". The only selectable option is to click on the Move to Inbox button. The messages that are getting tagged as junk mail seem to come from the same sender: a popular classified ads site called Kijiji. When people contact you through the site, their email messages all end up in junk mail.

How can this be happening if Junk Mail is filtering is off and when using an iCloud email account?

iCloud automatic junk mail filtering

iCloud uses trend analysis, dynamic lists, and other technology to automatically detect and block junk mail before it reaches your inbox. While there isn’t a way to completely stop junk mail from reaching your inbox, here are some tips that can help reduce the amount of junk mail you receive.

If you think a message might be junk mail, don't open it

When you open an email that looks like junk mail, it can alert spammers that their message was received and opened from an active email account. This can lead to more junk mail. Delete any messages that look like junk mail before you open them. Then you can avoid more junk mail from spammers.

Spammers use the email image-loading feature to determine whether your email account is active. Here's how to keep images from loading automatically:

  • In Mail on your Mac, choose Mail > Preferences. In the Viewing tab, deselect Load remote content in messages.
  • In iCloud Mail, click the Show Actions menu in the sidebar and choose Preferences. In the General tab, deselect Load images in HTML messages.

Correct false-positives

Filtering out junk mail can block a legitimate email from reaching your inbox. This is called a false-positive.

If you feel that a legitimate email message was accidentally filtered, you can mark it as not junk so that any future messages from the same sender go to your inbox:

  • On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 7 or later, open the message in the Junk folder, tap the folder icon at the bottom, then tap Inbox to move the message.
  • On your Mac, select the message and click the Not Junk button in the Mail toolbar. Or just drag the message to the Inbox in the sidebar.
  • At iCloud.com, select the message, then click Not Junk in the notification bar at the top of the message window. Or just drag the message to the Inbox in the sidebar.

If you notice that multiple email messages are being delayed, bounced, or not delivered, contact iCloud Support. Make sure to check your Junk folder for email messages that were incorrectly marked as junk mail. To check your Junk folder at iCloud.com, choose the Mail application and click the Junk folder in the sidebar. Email messages in the Junk folder are automatically deleted after 30 days.

Thanks tygb, but all of that information is known and a given, yet the problem persists. This is not an iCloud issue, since the email is not an iCloud email (IMAP hosted on MediaTemple servers), this seems to be a Mail app issue.

Summary:

1) Email in question is not an Apple email (iCloud, .mac, etc)

2) Mark as "not junk" option not available, even though the message is automatically moved to the junk folder

3) Junk mail filter is turned off in preferences

4) iCloud.com is irrelevant as email is on personal domain and hosted by MediaTemple

Cheers.

True, this is definitely more than a settings issue. However, I've fixed a lot of problems from the command line. Could even be corrupt preferences now that I think about it...

If it's server side it would mean that MediaTemple (my server) is somehow filtering emails from IMAP to my junk mail folder in my Mail app. I think this is impossible though, because the junk mailbox is not on the IMAP server, and I can't think of how MediaTemple would be flagging emails as junk for the Mail app to use. And since junk mail filtering is off in Mail, there would be no reason for Mail to be looking for these flags anyway.

Very confusing.

Once I had an issue in my mails , as I never enabled password , and firewall settings in my service provider Modem and Air port Express , and after that avoid exchanging mail address to unknown persons .And then switched to another service provider who had a very strong firewall settings on their network .

And , I had to discontinue that mail id ( contacted them the mail id was immediately discontinued and was removed from the server after 90 days ) .

I have the same problem with both Hotmail and Gmail IMAP accounts. No junk or spam on the server side, junkmail filtering disabled om my Mac. Facebook and CNet messages and some other go to junk box no matter what I do. Did you find a solution? I dropped Outlook as a buggy app, but Mail proves to be at par ...

You say your junk folder is not on the server site, but if you are using IMAP, then it should be there. Open Mail's preferences and go to Accounts, then Mailbox Behaviors for that account. See what is set for the Junk mailbox. If it shows an IMAP mailbox, then the server is likely the culprit.

If your server is actually putting them in the Junk mailbox, then you will need to log into the server webmail site and mark them as not junk from there.
