Photos transfer from Iphone to PC via drag and drop hangs.

Hi,

I usually use my iPhone 6s to take pictures and transfer it to my windows PC via a USB cable.

Recently, when I drag and drop my photos from DCIM folder I opened, the copying windows pops out, but hangs during processing. After about 3 minute or longer, an error message saying, "The requested value cannot be determined." pops out. The picture is only 2MB in size.

I have no problems using the import feature and backup my phone with the same USB cable I use for drag and drop copy of photos. The USB cable is original as provided in the box, and I've tried with another USB cable, which didn't work. I've tried this with my other laptop too. and Yes, I did clicked the 'trust' this computer button.

This problem started sometime back in May 2016, after I got my hands on this phone, it could transfer via drag and drop copying, but sometimes, the photo is broken/damage, and I would just try to copy it again, it usually works fine after that. I've tried factory reset, and even enter the diagnostic screen with itunes to detect errors, but nothing was found. It just got worst this time.

Please help?

Regards,

Matthew

I found a workaround for this. The error "The requested value cannot be determined" occurs only when trying to copy the whole DCIM folder by drag 'n drop to my laptop or when there are many files in one folder. What helps is to drag and drop every single folder from within the DCIM folder on your iPhone over to Windows. In case it's a folder with many files the error may occur again. If this happens, I always transfer my files in batches of a certain number. I tried this because I believed one file might have been corrupted so I wanted to locate that file by batch transfer but there was no corrupted file. All files transferred correctly. But it's a pain in the *** to backup an iOS device that way but it works. I had the same problem with my iPad.

Cheers!🙂

After lots of troubleshooting (i.e. doing a clean install of Windows 10, clean install of iTunes and the DCIM drivers - I still have the errors - I have to chalk this up as bad design by Apple. I'm sure if I had an Apple system I wouldn't have this issue.

Anyways, I found an alternate non-Apple solution - it is called iBackupBot - it is free - download it and install. You can navigate to the filesystem on your iPhone, and drag and drop the files from there - no errors and it even copies much faster (almost 5 times faster)

Same issue - I noticed that while it is writing any file to the disk the file size is 36 GB while the file is being written. Once the copy is complete - the file size goes down to about 1-2 MB for pictures and a few gigs for long movies.

My guess is this design might be causing your system to prematurely run out of disk space.

Apple - can we get an easier drag and drop solution?

Thanks,
