Panasonic's AG-DV2000 & Intel Mac & FCP 5

Hi -

I recently purchased the Mac Pro workstation. It's a wonderful machine and I am happily working with Logic Pro on it. (Note: I am relatively new to the Mac world!)

Having made the decision to go Apple, I am thinking about purchasing the FCP video editing suite. I am currently using Sony's Vegas 7 on my aging Dell Workstation. Vegas is a good program. My intent, though, is to use my 3+ year old Dell workstation soley as a sound library storage for Logic Pro. The FCP program is looking quite attractive as I read all of its capabilities. I am still working in standard definition DV. However, I figure that the Mac Pro plus the FCP will be a worthwhile initial investment as I slowly upgrade my very modest video (and audio) studio towards High Definition.

All of my "hardware", so far, is standard definition DV. This includes Canon's GL2 DV camera and Panasonic's AG-DV2000 deck. Until I can afford to make the financial move towards HDV, these devices will continue to be used. They both work just fine.

Now. . . Panasonic no longer makes the AG-DV2000. The most current device in this class that's made by Panasonic is the AG-DV2500. I don't plan on purchasing the DV2500. (I'd rather save the $$$ towards the HD equipment.) I can't find any direct information anywhere that would tell me if the AG-DV2000 will work with the Mac Pro computer and the newest version of FCP.

It is my understanding that FCP continues to work with standard definition DV as well as the HDV. So it stands to reason that the FCP program will work with the AG-DV2000. My concern, though, is that the Intel based Mac Pro computer may not work well with this device.

Today, I had some spare time and experimented with the AG-DV2000 and the new Apple computer. I plugged in the AG-DV2000 into one of the Firewire ports of the Mac Pro. I then checked to see if the Apple computer recognized it. Sadly, it didn't seem to mention anywhere that it existed. HOWEVER, I activated the iMovie HD program found in the Mac Pro and I was able to view the tape that was being played back (from the DV2000) on the Apple computer's video screen. This was very hopeful!

So. . . . Can the Panasonic AG-DV2000 work with the Intel Mac computer AND the latest version of FCP. I know that I will not be able to edit any high definition stuff. I am no where near ready to go towards this yet. I hope, though, that I would be able to continue to edit my modest and simple standard definition DV projects using my happy new Apple computer.

Any information on this concern would be most sincerely and gratefully appreciated.

Thank you! 🙂

Ted
