I dropped my brand new Macbook Pro

I received the most incredible present from my other half for Christmas; the top end, 15" Macbook Pro with touchbar.

Coming out of work tonight, as I went to put my laptop bag in to the foot well, I dropped the bag, an inch from the floor.

The damage is astonishing, considering it was in a bag and it was dropped from such a short height.

I took it straight to Apple would couldn't figure out which half of the laptop the dent belonged to and thus couldn't give me an accurate repair cost.

It ranged from £185 to £885 I believe. Depending on whether it was the drop part of the case or the bottom or both.

Based on the photo, can you guys figure out which part will need replacing and guesstimate repair costs?

I need to figure out whether to get it repaired or sell it on cheap and buy a new laptop.

Sadly, I can't even look at the thing, let alone use it. No doubt the majority will not understand, but I just cannot face looking at this for 4 years.

My 4 year old pro is literally immaculate. I've never dropped a phone or laptop in my life and I go and drop the most expensive one I've owned, that was a gift.

Gutted is an understatement.

I am certainly no hardware expert (I know much more about software). But it appears to me as if you have at least two distinct areas where your Mac was injured (see photo - circled area is one issue while pointed-to area is another issue on a separate component):

So my suspicion is the larger price will be closer to your final price. I would think the Apple Store would offer you a way for the repair staff to examine your machine somewhat more thoroughly and then provide you a more restricted, knowledgeable estimate of the final price.

Well certainly sorry to hear of your misfortune Realmaverick. Good to keep it in perspective as accidents happen.

It does seem a 1 in 1000 chance at such a height (1 inch) the case would fail in such a catastrophic way. I guess computers don't bounce like they used to.

Upper case replacement includes the complex keyboard, lower case going to be less expensive, plus the labor.

At least the screen was not damaged or I might be crying myself.

A couple thoughts:

Maybe you have insurance of some sort that would cover the cost.

Think about the possibility of investing in a better quality computer bag—a good new bag has more cushioning than older bags.

Please report back when all is said and done.

Funnily I can't really see that, not looking at it in person.

I mainly just want the part with the very apparent dent in it. Which appears to be the lower case assembly. Which I believe houses the entire logic board etc.

I imagine Apple have made it so that the case cannot be changed without changing the entire logic board.

Sadly, this will be my final macbook. The repairability is now just so shocking, on top of the extautionate pricing.

It's worth noting that I did also try to buy a case from Apple but they didn't have any. The case I was using before it went missing was a slip case for my old MBP.

Anyway, I've done a lot of thinking tonight and I've concluded that I have little choice. I'm going to have to pay £900 to repair the hinge.

However, I am feeling bitterly disappointed in Apple. They shouldn't have made design choices that mean individual parts cannot be replaced, causing repair costs to become astronomical.

Anyway, nothing to gain by ranting and moaning, I'll just pay it and in future when I'm due to upgrade, wait to see if the current gen are any easier to repair and if not, make the switch to the dark side.

Thanks for the replies.
