Leap second

I have a question on how the Apple Watch handles leap seconds. In the press recently, there has been mentioned that the next leap second will be added at the end of December 2016.

From this website:

https://hpiers.obspm.fr/iers/bul/bulc/bulletinc.dat

“The sequence of dates of the UTC second markers will be: 2016 December 31 23h 59m 59s, 2016 December 31 23h 59m 60s, 2017 January 1, 0h 0m 0s"

My questions are:

  • will the Apple Watch handle this automatically?
  • how will it do that?

Thanks

Yes, Watch synchronises with your iPhone (and possibly has it's own NTP daemon, which _keeps_ it in sync), however, not every carrier provides NITZ (time synchronisation via cellular network signalling, usually once when the phone connects to the network, sometimes only when it's switched on), those that do probably won't have their own atomic clock, they use GPS (which is synchronised to atomic clocks).

Yes, all these automatic clocks sync with UTC which is always slightly out from Atomic Time. What happens with actual clocks which sync to a timekeeper such as Munich or Anthorn is that they start a sync at midnight and so it takes a few seconds to download the correction and apply it - in this case resulting in the second-hand pausing for 1 second at a few seconds part the hour. Your watch and phone may do this, or may not correct until 0100 depending on how their time check works.
