How to delete Apple Mail mailbox that only shows in Finder?

How to delete Apple Mail mailbox (named Roche) that only shows in Finder? It does not show in Apple Mail sidebar (left pane).

It shows empty (zero bytes on disk) at

/Users/~/Library/Mail/V4/<hexadecimal code here>/COMPANIES.mbox

I ask because Apple warns that mailboxes should not be deleted in Finder, but from Apple Mail application:

Mail for Mac: Create or delete mailboxes

https://support.apple.com/kb/PH22314?locale=en_US&viewlocale=en_US

I want to delete it because I cannot create a new mailbox with such name from Apple Mail, since then I get the error:

The operation couldn’t be completed. (MCMailErrorDomain error 1033.)

Mail was unable to rename “~/Library/Mail/<hexadecimal code here>/COMPANIES.mbox/Roche”.

Thanks!

Mac mini, macOS Sierra (10.12.2), Booting from internal Fusion Drive.

Is Roche a subfolder under COMPANIES? Is this an IMAP account? Is it possible you are no longer subscribed to this folder?

I sugget you first try rebuilding Mail's index first to see if it will show the folder in Mail.

With Mail quit....

Go to your User's Library/Mail/V4/Maildata folder and delete the three files with envelope in the name.

Open Mail. It will reindex your files.

If this fails and you can manually remove the folder, you will need to do the reindex again. Anytime you make any changes manually, you would need to reindex Mail.

Be careful that you got just the subfolder and not the parent folder COMPANIES if you do this manually in the Finder.

Always backup first when making changes like this.

Thanks. Roche is a subfolder under COMPANIES. No IMAP account. Apple Mail has two POP accounts. Never had IMAP. Not subscribed or synchronized to any other device.

The V4 folder is quite large (20.91 GB on disk for 421,601 items). I rather would like to fix the issue without rebuilding Mail's index (eg., doing it from Apple Mail), if possible. Any idea for it? Thanks and Happy New Year 2017!

How about the Rebuild command in the Mailbox menu. Try selecting all of the account Inboxes and use the Rebuild command. Diane's method does the same thing, but more efficiently.

Are you certain they are still POP? Sierra will convert POP to IMAP if the email provider has that service.

Thanks. I tried, yet it did not fix the issue. Selecting the main COMPANIES folder and then "Mailbox - Rebuild" does nothing: no special activity shown by Menu Meters

Selecting mailboxes inside works rebuilding (high CPU activity shown by Menu Meters), but does not fix the issue. As said before, the empty mailbox (Roche) does show in Finder, but not in Apple Mail sidebar, so I cannot select it there to rebuild or delete.

The mail provider has both POP and IMAP, but both accounts are POP as shown by "Mail - Preferences - Accounts".
