I bought a used iPod 5th gen for my son. I wrapped and put up until Xmas. About a month and a half. Upon opening he wasnt able to use due to activation lock. the post has been removed and I have no way to find owner to ask him to fix. Can apple contact the email linked to the iPod giving them my info to contact me?

Apple is not able to contact former owners of Apple devices. Also, it does not appear that you have the complete e-mail associated with that iPod anyway.

The activation lock means that the 'find my device' app is activated on icloud. The former owner would have to access that icloud account to remove the activation lock.

If you can, you need to return it to whoever sold it to you. They should not have sold you a device that was locked with an Activation Lock. There is no way around it if you cannot contact the person who put it on, or someone who knows that person's Apple ID and password. Did you purchase it somewhere where you can return it?

Sorry that happened to you. Very disappointing for both you and your son 😟

I understand, and your thinking is good. However, all there is to go on is one letter and the icloud domain, which narrows the email down to about 25 million possibilities. Without the entire email address, it would be impossible to identify the previous owner.

If you have a feeling that it may be lost or stolen, the right thing to do would be to turn it over to the police.

but here's what I think has happened. I think that the original owner just made a mistake before he sold it before you sell it you have to sign into apple id and password. and remove it the product from your iCloud so it would clean. but what they did was signed into their apple account and erase the ipod thinking that was going to clear it off. and then sold it . because I had it wrapped up for over a month waiting for Christmas. Never got ahold of them with a problem ,so they took the post down.

I don't have the previous owners email address because this is all that shows up. I was hoping that since the device is registered with an Apple ID, Apple could send that person that had registered the iPod with the email address registered to it. and tell them that I'm trying to register the device but cannot because they didn't remove the iPod from there icloud. as far as I know it could be lost or stolen and I have no way to contact these people to find out. to offer them the device back. If it was lost or stolen the owner can never get there device back? Because there isn't any specialized message with there information to contact.

I have tried that. The police department wouldn't take the iPod because it hasn't been reported stolen. I gave the sn# to the county sheriff's office and our local PD. I also looked it up on iCloud . It's locked but not reported stolen with a personalized message. After spending $100 on it. It very well could be that the old owner just didn't know how to clean it for selling I just can't see there being no other means to help there customer that spent there hard earned money on a devices with that amount of security and protection and you get stuck with a paper weight. Never getting to use this brand new very expensive device . Apple has the original owners apple ID used to set up the device along with the device serial number so why can't they send them an email with the whereabouts of the device still registered to them

I cannot contact the original owner because I don't know how to contact the original owner.. with no way to get the original owners information to contact them ..believe me I would be glad to contact the original owner if only I could get his contact information I would gladly call him, email him , give him his iPod back if they lost it . Or if it was stolen and sold to me, or get the **** thing cleared so my son could play on his Xmas present.

Yes, I understand what may have happened. Not knowing how you purchased the device there is no way for me to speculate on whether the original owner just forgot, or whether you were scammed with a stolen device. But if you have no way to go back to the person you purchased it from, there is nothing that can be done. You were either scammed or the victim of a careless person, but either way, there is nothing that can be done to fix it. Only the person who put the lock on, or someone who knows that person's Apple ID and password can remove the Activation Lock.

Very sorry,
