Hello MThierry,

Thanks for asking the Apple Support Communities for help with limiting your cellular usage with your iPhone. I am happy to recommend a few things to help you with this.

To answer your question, DNS stands for the Domain Name System ( DNS ). It stands for a decentralized naming system for devices connected to the Internet. To limit your phone from using cellular data I first recommend that you disable any apps from using cellular data that you absolutely do not need. This help article discusses this: About cellular data settings and usage on your iPhone and iPad . For example, I do not personally believe I have ever used the Compass. I disable this from accessing cellular data. Since it needs to transmit and receive data to maintain for when you open it, this will use more cellular data. The best part of this is, if you are in an area without a wireless network and suddenly need the compass, you can go back to these settings and enable it again. This is why I personally have most apps disabled except things like Phone, Messages, Mail, Maps, and whatever else you need to use daily, even if you are off a wireless network.

The second recommendation I can offer is to disable Wi-Fi Assist. This help article talks about Wi-Fi Assist: About Wi-Fi Assist . What this feature does is allow your phone to switch from a wireless connection to the cellular connection seamlessly, in times of poor wireless connection. I personally am in an area of great wireless signal most days, so I have this setting turned off. Doing this step will help limit how much cellular data is used.

Thanks again for asking the Apple Support Communities for assistance with this. Thanks and have a great rest of your day.
