HL-L2360DW Brother Printer won't wake when printing

I just purchased a wireless Brother monochrome laser. Everything worked fine until the printer went into sleep mode. It would then show offline and it couldn't be located. I had to turn the printer off, and then turn it back on to get it out of sleep. It worked fine while it was in Ready mode. You can't turn sleep, or deep sleep off on this printer.

I couldn't find any good answers when I searched the internet for a resolution. I did see many others have the same issue, so I wanted to post the resolution that will save many the countless hours I lost of my life trying to get the printer to work. Spoiler . . . AirPrint / Bonjour is the issue. I don't know if it's on the Apple side, or the Brother side, but AirPrint is the default choice when setting up the printer, so I selected it.

Resolution:

  • Create a static IP address in your router for the printer. I couldn't access my router so I called tech support and they set it up for me. This alone worked while the printer was in Sleep Mode, but it still wouldn't wake from Deep Sleep mode.
  • Configure the printer to use the newly created Static IP. I won't go into that detail here. It's pretty straight forward as soon as you figure out how to use the control panel on this particular printer. You can also reference the user's manual.
  • Open Printers and Scanners and click the add printer ( + ) button at the bottom.
  • Select IP from the icons at the top.
  • Enter the static IP address for your printer. You can give it a name if you'd like to.
  • In the Use drop down box, it selected the correct CUPS printer driver on one of my MacBook's, but the other I had to select other and scroll down to the right model.
  • Save it and delete the one that is using AirPrint.

  • I hope this helps.
