iMac 2007 won't boot in normal mode just grey screen

Hi everyone

I have a 2007 iMac, it won't boot in normal mode, it chimes, the Apple logo appears and a spinning ball, then just a blank grey screen. It does boot in safe mode, I've run all the disk utilities etc, repaired permissions etc, even did a clean install of the OS X Snow Leopard (originally it had Lion on it), but to no avail. I've reset the PRAM, SMC etc, I've tried everything you usually come across to help with this problem.

Has anyone any suggestions of what else I could try?

Many thanks

Hi

If it works in safe mode, this is a good sign. Safe mode stops 3rd party extension/apps/procedures from running

I would while in safe boot do the following (if you have a backup)

  • Clear login items( System prefs> users and groups> login items> click lock on bottom left> then click "-" icon to remove them
  • I would also clear out some temp folders caches, launch agents and launch deamons( Finder> menu bar> go> hold ALT key while there> then select the folder i said too and move to trash. after this restart your computer and it should work. you should also empty trash at this stage
