Okay, here we go: I found some aged .rm files and was able to play them in VLC. Since Saeed had no success converting to MP3, I tried setting the profile to "Audio - CD", which actually converts the file to .WAV -- a format that iTunes supports.
This worked. Then I dragged the resulting WAV file into an iTunes window, and it got imported in that format. Then, in iTunes, File > Convert > Create AAC version (you can change this to MP3 if you like). And voilĂ !
I hope this will work for you, Saeed.
Hi Saeed,
This should not be too difficult. First off, iTunes does not have its own format, but rather supports a number of standardized audio formats, among which the mostly widely used are MP3 and AAC (or m4a). So we're looking for some kind of third-party audio utility to convert RM into one of these formats. An earlier thread on this subject (which isn't too informative) is here:
How can I get .RM files to iTunes?
But a quick web search for "convert rm to aac or mp3" yielded a couple of pages of promising hits. Perhaps someone here will have more personal experience.
Thank you Richard for the explanation, it is very helpful.
As you suggest, I hope someone here could point me to a specific and safe converter. I am very cautious about trying the links from a web search.
Actually, converting RM might be difficult. I don't have any .rm files but it is quite possible the files are DRM copy-protected and like similar files from other places (e.g., Apple's old DRM music files) can only be played with Real Media software. So the first question is if this is the case. Try the free VLC media player and see if the file will play with that. If it won't then it is unlikely to convert except by methods to circumvent the DRM protection and we aren't allowed to discuss those on the Apple forum. If it will play then you can try using VLC itself to do the conversion though there is a bit of a learning curve.
Thanks, Limnos. I also checked the old standby Max utility (which sadly is no longer being supported) and it does not list RM among the 20-odd formats it can convert to/from. So I suspect you are right.
I have Max but I tend to use XLD instead. It has a slightly confusing interface (all settings have to be done through preferences) but has many features including ripping to multiple formats at the same time.
Tried VLC and the files play fine, but can not convert them. These are my old CD's which I had copied onto my old PC. When I purchased my Mac last year, I disposed my CD player and am not able to load from the original CD's either.
.RM is a really, really, really strange format for CDs. I don't know if I could rip to .RM format even if I wanted to. I'd have to go deliberately out of my way to even try.
VLC will convert but it isn't set up as a converter. It is a lot friendlier now than it was 2 years ago where it was really hidden. Look under the File menu, then Convert/Stream. Choose an export format (probably Audio - mp3) and a destination.
Again, I have no rm files so I can't try anything from this end. There is an older application called Soundconverter. It used to be payware but I think a month or so ago I noticed it up for free on the Mac App Store. I recall using it years ago for converting .swf audio files (another weird and ancient format).
Good work richard grant! I should have remembered that sometimes VLC won't go directly from point A to point B but needs an intermediate step, but since I had no rm files I couldn't poke around the way I usually would. 🙂
I agree! I'm just getting comfortable with XLD since Max has finally stopped working at all for me. Lovely icon, too.
Thanks Limnos, tried that but the output is in Text format !!
You selected save as file?
I can't remember why, but when I copied from my CDs to PC (all those years ago) i had raved them in .rm format. I think because at the time the quality of that format was best.
I selected Convert& Stream
Selected the file in the "Drop media here" section
In the "Choose Profile" I selected MP3
Then "Choose destination"
entered Save
result is text file
