iPad as main TV ???

There is a thread that addresses this that ends in why???

The "Why" is that if one is doing the "tiny house" thing that a "full size" (25inch LOL!) TV is just too big for occasional use, plus it uses another electrical outlet.

We would like to be able to connect an iPad to a Mohu Leaf to get local channels, and (really dreaming here...) also to plug in a Roku stick, to get those PAY streaming sources (ACORN is awesome; Amazon Prime and NetFlix are OK but tedious). It would sit on a "coffee table" equivalent , which is close enough to see the shows.

So finally, the question:

I anyone actually using the iPad Pro as their main TV device? If so, how is it working out?

OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

Hello MacPlus1987,

If you are interested in cord cutting and using an iPad as your alternative television, I recommend using the existing apps and services available for the iPad, rather than attempting to connect external devices such as the Mohu Leaf or Roku Stick, as those devices are designed to interface with actual television sets.

Presently, there are a robust number of services that provide content for the iPad, including Apple's own iTunes Store, which offers television shows within 24 hours of their live airing, movies, music, and podcasts. If you want other options, you may also consider the following apps available in the app store

1) Amazon Prime Video

2) Sling TV

3) Netflix

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/netflix/id363590051?mt=8

4) Hulu

In particular, Sling TV offers what is known as a "Skinny Bundle" of cable channels that may be live streamed to a supported device such as an iPad or the Apple TV. Hulu offers network television content, but like the iTunes Store, it is available within 24 hours of the live airing. Netflix offers original content, and a robust back-catalog of older content, including complete runs of popular, older series, such as How I Met Your Mother, and previous seasons of shows that are currently airing such as Gotham, Arrow and The Flash, as well as a mix of old and recent films. Amazon Prime Video largely offers a similar content catalog as Netflix, but with original content from Amazon studios.

My personal preference is to use Hulu for network television content, Netflix for its own original content, and the iTunes store for recent films and shows that are not offered by Hulu and Netflix.

Best of luck to you

I would not consider an iPad screen as my "main" TV screen - in a pinch, I may consider a 15" MBP screen to be acceptable, but that would be the smallest I'd ever consider. There isn't much joy in watching a movie when you have to be that close to a screen and/or need glasses to see it. How about a 19" TV (it doesn't take up much room):

I don't know how useful you will find this, but I can give you some input on this because I do watch Netflix on my iPad Air 2. I actually just spent a good part of the afternoon and early evening last Saturday binge watching The Crown on my iPad Air 2. I did this because the other TV's in the house were being used by everybody but me. I could have easily watched on my 13" MacBook Pro, but chose the iPad instead. I can tell you that this is not something that I would want to do over and over again in order to wach movies and TV shows. I am so spoiled by the large TV screens in my house and I am near sighted and wear bifocals, so watching video for an extended period of time on my iPad is quite tiresome to my eyes. There are a number of issues with glare from lamps and lights, dark scenes are very hard to watch, the detail gets lost in some scenes and so on.

My question to you is have you experimented with this at all? I don't mean connecting to Netflix or Hulu, but just watching videos for a period of time on the iPad?

Why not do a search for a small flat screen TV with an antenna/cable input and HDMI and USB inputs to plug in an Amazon TV or Google TV stick or to be able to plug your iPad into, if needed.

Flat screen TVs come in 12/13, 15 and 19 inch screen models and some come with built in DVD players for watching movies on DVDs!

These small flatscreen TVs are cheap!

AND, you're NOT tying up an expensive mobile computer just to watch movies and TV content on, all of the time.
