AirPods Rename Not Permanent

Hello,

I just got AirPods yesterday. It paired very easily with my iPhone 6. It quickly got synced with my MacBook Pro running the latest version of Sierra and my iPad Pro.

The problem is as soon as I rename my AirPods from "Nicolas's AirPods" to something else, the new name stays there until one of the following happens: I turn bluetooth off then back on. I connect the AirPods to my iPad Pro. I shut the AirPods case closed and open the case back up again.

In either of those situations, the AirPods will all revert back to the "Nicolas's AirPods" and the new name I assigned to it doesn't stick.

I tried resetting my AirPods. Then forgetting the AirPods on the Mac, iPhone and iPad. Then repairing it to my iPhone only with Wi-Fi and Cellular data disabled. Once re-connected, I would rename it what I wanted to and then turn on data (like this it would broadcast the name and pairing to all my other iCloud connected devices) but to no avail.

Is anyone else having trouble with having the AirPods being renamed?

Any tips, ideas or help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Nicolas

It turns out Apple has disallowed the renaming of the device to simply "AirPods" is the problem. If you name the device "AirPods" it reverts to "Nicolas's AirPods".

But if I name them anything else like "Penguin" or "Burgers" or "Butterflies" it sticks.

This is ridiculous. Since when does Apple control what I want to name my devices.
