My recent purchases are not showing up in my library to redownload. I have followed the instructions on retrieving previous material, but the most recent ones do not show up. I have some from years ago, but not recent ones, Also, how do I redownload when the message tells me album only/. Thanks Mike

Whether you can potentially redownload past purchases will partly depend upon your country (not sure if, for example, music can yet be redownloaded in all countries), whether the items are still in your country's store (rights-holders occasionally remove items), and if you've moved countries since buying them.
If they aren't showing in the Purchased section for redownloading (e.g. Purchased tabs in the store apps on your iPod ; Account > Purchased menu option on a computer's iTunes) then check to see if you've hidden them from the cloud : Hide and unhide iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store purchases - Apple Support
