unlock phone for international

I am going to study abroad in Italy. I requested that my phone be unlocked by my carrier. They then sent me instructions to backup, reset and restore my iphone so that it will accept an international SIM card. How will I know it is unlocked? They said it will remain 'locked' until I backup, reset and restore my phone. But I do not see on the site where it says it is locked? Just want to be sure it is unlocked before I leave.

Appreciate any advise for international use! (Going to Rome, Italy)

If you carrier has unlocked the device, after you restore, you should receive a message stating "Congratulations, your phone is unlocked".

As stated by Dirty Vegas, you can verify this by calling Applecare, after you have restored.

You know it is unlocked because you followed the instructions from your carrier. After doing all that, you can have AppleCare or the Apple Store Genius Bar look into the locked/unlocked status.
