How to update Super Disc driver?

Around the time I installed the new OS X Mavericks, my DVD/disc player stopped working. The motor takes in the disc, and then there's a lengthy pause before the disc is ejected. On different occasions I've tried many discs and many types of discs over the years, with the same result. The machinery's attempts to play the disc suggests to me (and I know pretty much nothing) that the problem may be software rather than hardware. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi soveery,

After reading your post, I can see that you're having some problems with your built-in SuperDrive. I'd like to provide some troubleshooting steps that may help you get this resolved.

Take a look at the steps outlined below. There are two steps in the list that won't apply to your SuperDrive, but the remainder of these steps should be beneficial.

Accepts discs but they don't mount or are automatically ejected

  1. Make sure the drive is not placed upside down. The aluminum enclosure should be facing up as shown in section 1.
  2. Check the disc's surface for scratches and dirt, since these things can prevent the disc from appearing on the desktop.
  3. Connect the MacBook Air SuperDrive directly to the computer's USB port instead a USB hub.
  4. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
  5. Ensure your drive can read the specific type of disc being used. The System Profiler or System Information may provide additional information regarding what media your computer supports.
    • OS X Snow Leopard v10.6 or earlier: Open Apple System Profiler by choosing "About this Mac" from the Apple () menu. Then, click More Info.
    • OS X Lion v10.7 and later: Click the Apple () menu and then hold down the Option key. Choose System Information from the menu.
  6. If the disc continues to not be recognized, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store.

FWIW, there is no driver for that Superdrive; I've had to have two of them replaced because they both malfunctioned. If that is the case with yours, you might want to consider buying an external third party (any other brand) tray loading CD/DVD burner/player as they will be much more reliable and will read about anything.
