The mail delivery system in most countries has identification numbers

or codes (letters & numbers in some location) that co-relate to towns

and geographic locations; so if you have an obligation to an authority

or a bank, or a utility bill or rent, this postal code would help in delivery.

Here is a page (not tested) that can serve as an example. It can locate

various post codes in several countries. Other such sites exist online.

Another site offers some information:

List of postal codes - Wikipedia

This list shows an overview of postal code notation schemes for all countries that

have postal or .... East Timor · TL, - no codes... for some (click on country name)

If you live in an area that has mail deliveries or parcel services, these

use the postal code. This also is used to help determine your legal

residency based on other obligatory payments via that address.

Anyway, any business or government agency that uses the mails or deliveries

should be able to help you determine your postal code; if renting, your landlord.

Sorry to not have an answer that fits everywhere. Some locations haven't a code.

In any event...

Good luck & happy trails! 🙂
