Is There Anything on The Macbook Like Microsoft Word and Notepad?

Hi. I'm a new Mac user. I've been using Windows all my life.

As a college student I use both Microsoft word a lot for essays and Notepad to set up ideas.

Is there anything like this on the new Macbook? I just purchased this Macbook yesterday. I remember a worker told me something similar to Microsoft Word existed but can't find it. As for the Notepad...anything?

Thanks.

As For note pad - there's TextEdit - which is like notepad & wordpad combined and improved - its already on your computer - and Microsoft Word is available for the mac - its interface is a little different to the one available for windows (IMO - better)

There's heaps of other programs (freeware & commercial & shareware) that do the same things as word but better too. If you want it for free - there's neoOffice and a few others...

Hey,

Welcome to the Mac world! Included with your Macbook is a trial version of Microsoft Office for Mac, so you can give that a try. A good Apple replacement for Word is Pages which is included in the iWork 06' suite that also includes Keynote(Apple's replacement for Powerpoint) all Word .doc files can be opened in Pages and can be saved as a .doc file as well. For more info check out the iWork page:

iWork 06'

I open and work on .doc files seemlessly with Pages and has proved to be a great replacement to Word.

Hope this helps!

Tom

Although many people have success with alternative programs I find that having Microsoft Office installed is absolutely essential. My workplace is highly Office-centric and complex document exchange is critical for me. But inspite of all the issues you'll hear about with Office for the Mac, it's a pretty good suite and does the job nicely. If you qualify for the teacher/student edition you can can 3 licenses for less than $150.

As many have noted, Textedit is the equivalent of notepad. If you do heavy text-oriented work the free program TextWrangler is worth a look. But Textedit is pretty capable -- much more than Notepad on Windows.
