Disable face recognition in Photos

Hi,

When I take photos with my iPhone and there happen to be people on it, Photos automatically sorts and collects those photos in extra folders. How can I disable this face recognition-tool?

If there should be no way to disable it at this moment, is Apple considering a option to turn it off, by the next iOS-update? Similar to the Health app, which was automatically registering steps at first launch. In the next update the automatic registration could be disabled.

Hoping for good news on this matter and looking forward to your reply.

Thanks in advance!

Then you may well have chosen the wrong products. Apple is well known (or notorious, depending on your perspective) for not giving the user lots of options. Their UI design philosophy seems to be that they know best and choices will just confuse people. It's a philosophy that works well for some and drives others to tear out their hair.

Apple, who is not reading here, does provide a feedback link:

There is some pretty good evidence that if enough people complain about a feature, Apple will make a change. I don't know how many constitutes "enough" but you should still submit feedback.

Best of luck.

Maybe you will be able to prevent the People albums from showing, but I sincerely doubt, that you will be able to disable the face detection completely. All "improvements" in Photos 2.0 are built on top of the face recognition. Just have a look on the advances in the new Photos release:

  • The Face detection and recognition has been completely rewritten with a new algorithm. It is so good, that Apple no longer provides a command to reject faces that are not a face. It is not supposed to happen.
  • Photos can now classify photos according to their content. It will classify photos into categories like Beach, Birthday, etc. To be able to compute the categories, it needs the recognized faces.
  • Photos 2 has better maps, and the thumbnails on the maps seem to be picked primarily from the photos with faces in them. Even if I hide a photo, it may show on the maps as a key photo, if i tis showing a recognized face.
  • The new Memories feature is relying heavily on the recognized faces and places. Most of the memories are created based on recognized people in special places at special dates.

Since nearly none of the most recent new features will work without recognized people, I am very sceptical that Apple will add the option to disable the face recognition.

1 - there is no way to turn face and object recognition off in Photos and is not likely to be since many of Photos features like memories depend on it

2 - No photos are duplicated or collected in extra folders (there are small thumbnails created and collected) - like all albums in Photos the people albums are virtual

3 - No one knows what changes will be made in the future and since Photos for Mac does not run under IOS no IOS releases will affect it in any way - IOS is only on mobile devices

Thanks for your prompt reply and your clear answer, Larry.

It's a very user unfriendly feature of Apple and it's making me feel stupid. It is so easy to find photos on your iPhone. They are all in the same folder! So there is no need for a pre-selection by default, at all. If I need an album I can create it myself.

It seems the odds are against a fix for that problem, but I still hope Apple will provide an on/off button, like they did for the Health app. Being able to switch functions on and off, is the main reason I choose Apple Products. I still have confidence this issue will be resolved.

Best regards!

I'm not clear what you question here is - Moments on IOS and on OS X Sierra are set up identically - finding a photo on either an IOS device or a Mac is the same

Thanks for pointing that out, Larry. My concern is not technical, however. My issue is I'm sharing a reasonable part of my privacy in trade for a feature I could already do myself, creating an album. That seems a bit out of balance, in my opinion. But like Idris said, for some it works and for some it doesn't, depending on the perspectives. It would be nice to have the possibility to turn it on and off. We'll see.
