superdrive not reading disc, can't eject

Have just purchased a superdrive to use with our iMac. Put a disc with photos on it in (probably made on a Windows computer) and it makes all the right noises but doesn't seem to be recognising anything. Now I have a disc in the drive and no way to eject it as the drive is not showing up in a finder window at all. Any help much appreciated.

iMac, macOS Sierra (10.12.2)

Thank you for your suggestions. I followed your instructions and am able to open disk utitilty when the superdrive is not plugged in but when it is the disk utility just says "loading disks" and the little circle goes round and round for ages. starting to wonder if it is a faulty unit?
