editing footnotes in Pages

I think I'm going crazy. All I want to do is edit footnotes in a document in Pages on my new Mac Pro. There simply doesn't seem to be any way to access, open or change the footnote once its been entered. The numbering in the body-text is also wierd. I'm stunned that I even have to search for how to do this most basic, common scholarly writing operation

Pages 6.0.5 on MacOS Sierra 10.12.1

Triple click on a footnote to select it all. Then you can change font, size or other formatting. Or a triple click then a single click and the cursor is inside the footnote, ready for you to edit the text.

After formatting and editing the footnotes (and separately, formatting the numbers in the body text):
