Can't get Korg Microkey2 37 working

Hey guys

I'm only a week into using Logic and I just bought a Korg Microkey2 37 USB MIDI keyboard. I'm struggling to get anything out of it in both Logic Pro X and Garageband. I've done a heap of searching but nothing seems to work. It might be something simple to a veteran when you read the notes.

Hardware:

  • 2016 MBP
  • Sierra 10.12.2
  • Logic Pro X 10.2.4
  • Garageband 10.1.4
  • Korg Microkey2 37
  • USB cord that came with the Korg
  • Apple USB-C to USB adapter

Observations:

Measures taken:

  • PRAM and SMC Reset performed
  • First Aid on HDD performed
  • Installed Korg drivers (Sierra is claimed to be supported)
  • Tried different ports
  • Talked for an hour to Apple Support to no avail

I hope that's enough information to paint a picture for you. I really appreciate any help you can provide. I'm absolutely clueless, I was expecting it to virtually be plug and play (like it was in Windows, oddly enough).

Thanks again!

In many ways... it sounds like a power issue, even through the Korg seems active it's only enough to be recognized by the system but not enough to be fully functional. Can you beg or borrow a decent powered USB 2.0 hub and try that. This has worked for some (but not all) USB 3.0 users in the past. I certainly can't guarantee success but if you can grt ahold of a quality, powered USB 2.0 hub it's worth a try.

The fact that it works on the WinPC is telling. It could very well have to do with the Adapter or USB-C itself, not supplying enough power.

I had read about the USB hub solution working for some butI dismissed it being a power issue because it's worked in the following environments:

  • MacBook Air, El Capitan, USB 3.0
  • Windows 10 box, USB 3.0

I've been waiting for Belkin's USB-C hub (which is likely ~$350 AUD!) so I can get my workstation set up properly but I guess I'll have to buy a USB 2 hub in the meantime as sadly I don't know anyone with one. The problem with that is it's still going to have to go through the USB adapter, but I guess it's another thing tested and ruled out.

My top suspect was Apple's USB-C to USB adapter is not working correctly but I don't know enough about how USB works. I thought perhaps it's not converting the data correctly or something, which is why the KB is being detected in AMS, LPX, GB and MIDI Monitor, but not registering any output from it on my 2016 MBP.

I was hoping it was just a setting in Logic that I wasn't aware of...hopefully someone has some experience with this and can shine some light on it.

Thanks for your help again, Pancenter.

No luck yet, no. I'm tearing my hair out here!

I tried the Korg on my partner's MacBook Air (older model) and it showed up in Audio MIDI Setup without needing any drivers. Interestingly, it also worked when I clicked Test Setup, which doesn't work when I do it on my MBP. My partner's MBA is on El Cap, so there's that.

I wonder if the USB-C adapter is creating issues? The confusing thing is LPX and GB are both detecting an input device when I plug it in, yet Audio MIDI Setup and MIDI Monitor aren't registering any activity when I test them.

Thanks for the reply. I uninstalled the Korg MIDI driver, removed the device from Audio MIDI Setup (which I'll call AMS to save typing it in future) and rescanned. It brought up two devices, the Korg and a generic MIDI device.

If I reset all MIDI drivers inside Logic Pro it removes the generic device from AMS and sets the number of MIDI devices inside LPX to 1, which seems correct. However, the LPX LED it's still not registering any in or out!

I was on the phone to an Apple Senior Advisor for a couple of hours last night trying to get this sorted. They got me to try booting into Safe Mode, creating a test profile and I also reinstalled MacOS. All to no avail.

I went into a local Authorised Apple Dealer and tested the keyboard on a few of their 2016 MBPs (note: none were 15" and I'm not sure what their specs were). AMS displayed the keyboard just like mine, however on several occasions it output a tone when Test Device was selected. However, it was intermittent and not at all consistent when it worked and when it didn't. The KB sometimes didn't power up at all when plugged in and other times the LED on the KB flashed on and off on occasion. The LED typically indicates it's receiving power. There seemed to rhyme or reason to the flashing, it also appeared to be random.

In the end, they were clueless as to what might be going on too, as the behaviour was so erratic and inconsistent across MBPs. I've had consistent behaviour on the MacBook Air and Win10, so I'm thinking this is perhaps a USB-C issue. Could the ports be supplying too much power and not regulating it, making the KB wig out? I'm totally clueless as to how that works.

Lastly, Korg got back to me and after reading this thread and everything I've tried they've forwarded it onto Korg Japan and I'm waiting to hear what they say.

That ***** that the support from Korg is so bad, I had the same problem with Presonus customer care, awful.

However, I have had no problems whatsoever with my Korg micro key on both my computers, literally plug and play, amazing, sorry to rub it in.

BUT, both my Macs are 2015 models and El Captan, may be this is your problem? or it maybe a faulty keyboard.

if you still have no luck, I have used the Alesis Q49 and Q25, both amazing, plug and play again, simple and easy to use, and cheap.

The keyboard works flawlessly as a plug and play device on my Windows 10 desktop and Macbook Air. The problem is explicitly USB-C. It's super frustrating. At this rate I'm not sure they even care or will fix it.

I'll check out those other keyboards if nothing has changed in a month or so's time (I definitely won't be giving Korg another cent in my life). Thanks for the recommendations.
