Difference in Apple Watches

What is the difference between the series 1 and 2 watch or the generation 1 watch? Is there a generation 2 out yet?

Hi

Some differences between model ranges that you may find helpful to note include:

  • Apple Watch (1st generation) models have a single core processor.
  • Newer models - in the Series 1 and Series 2 ranges - have a faster, dual-core processor.
  • 1st generation and Series 1 models are splash and water resistant, but should not be submerged.
  • Series 2 models have:

A higher level of water resistance, being suitable for wear whilst shallow water swimming.

  • A brighter display (twice as bright as 1st generation and Series 1 models).
  • Built-in GPS.
    • This feature can track your route during workouts and, subject to it being connected to a trusted Wi-Fi network at the time, help you to locate a lost watch.

  • All Apple Watch models are able to run the latest software (watchOS) version.

Apple Watch Series 1&2 are all second generation watches. They differ from gen one, in that it has a faster dual core processor.

Series1 only comes in aluminum and is splash resistant. Series2 comes in aluminum and stainless steel and is water resistant- not waterproof. It locks to fitness tracking and will do little more in the water. Showering isn't recommended unless you shower without soap.

The second difference is built in GPS in Series2. This is only for fitness tracking and will not work in maps to navigate around. To use it to track a workout, you start The Workout App on the Watch, it tracks you, and ONLY when synced back with the phone, can you view your map. Series1 will still track your workout without the phone, just no visible map.
