Fresh install on new HD in my MacBook Pro now running Sierra. Mail settings seem to match my other devices but Mail indicates outgoing mail server is OFFLINE. A Google search offered multiple solutions -some scary. I'm sure this is simple ???

To search this site and constrain the search results to Sierra (for example) type Sierra in the Place field found beneath "Restrict results by". Sierra will appear after a brief moment, and you have to select it.
I also suggest sorting by "Last Modified", and consider a reasonable time period such as 90 days.
