Apple TV full screen Ipad

I was able to watch video full screen from my iPad to my Apple TV.

Mid video it stopped working.

Nothing I can do seems to get it back. (Reset IPad, Apple TV, router)

As soon as I touch AirPlay, Apple TV the Mirroring feature comes up, and my iPad is replicated on TV. (So network etc must be working)

The Apple TV icon under "Mirroring" just spins indefinitely.

Go full screen on the iPad and the iPad and tv go grey.

Very frustrating

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.

  1. Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
  2. Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
  3. Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
  4. Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
  5. Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
  6. Restart your mobile device or computer.

If you are still having problems, try using 802.11n for wifi if you are currently using either 802.11b or 802.11g.

You might also try removing any other software related to screen sharing or streaming to remote displays that you might have installed at some time.

If your problem is AirPlaying from a computer, try disabling bluetooth

Yes, there are immense differences.

Basic AirPlay sends the original content (video/audio) file to the Apple TV, mirroring sends a mirror of the display on the iPad.

The original video content is likely to be (but not always) 16:9 and will, therefore, fill a TV screen, whereas the iPad display is 4:3 and therefore will show black bars each side when mirrored to a TV screen.

The file can be sent as is and therefore can arrive in less time than it takes to play, mirroring is always live and is sent in real time (less reliable).

If you consider the image below for example and assume it to be (for the sake of this explanation) your iPad display when viewing the YouTube website...

User uploaded file

If you mirror, you will see...

User uploaded file

If you send the video by basic AirPlay, you will see...

User uploaded file

To get video by basic airplay you will need the site or app to support it, you can enable basic airplay either by swiping up from the bottom of the screen and then left or using the airplay icon in the corner of the video feed.

It's not really clear what you are saying. Is it that you only get the option to mirror or that basic airplay doesn't work properly, I got the impression it was the later which is why I suggested what I did because I think it's a network issue.

If it's that you don't get an option to use basic airplay, then either the provider doesn't support it or you are trying in the wrong places. Make sure AirPlay mirroring isn't selected then swipe the control panel left for basic airplay or look for the airplay icon on the video itself.

edit, my post above didn't show up at first, now it does.

Thanks for your perseveranc. I appreciate any help!

I'm unsure of the difference between "Air Play" and "Mirroring".

I get my iPad reproduced on my TV, including videos. (So in my mind, things like the network must be ok.)

I can "full screen" the video on the iPad no problems (but if I do it while mirroring, the iPad and the TV just go grey like they are about to change to full screen, but never do.)

It used to work. IE: full screen on the iPa. Swipe up and select "Airplay mirroring"

I'm starting to think there is a difference between "Airplay" and "Mirroring" that I don't understan. But again, it was working, then stopped.

Frustrating.

Thanks again.

Hi. Winston has already explained the difference between mirroring and basic AirPlay. But he omitted a couple of twists that may be confusing you. First, some websites prevent basic AirPlay, allowing only mirroring. You can avoid this by enabling basic AirPlay from the iPad Control Center before loading the webpage. Second, when you switch the iPad video player to full screen, mirroring automatically changes to basic AirPlay. You can tell this because you see the full screen video on the TV (no player controls) and the iPad says "This video is playing on Apple TV". Third, basic AirPlay works by sending the video URL to Apple TV, which streams directly from the server. That connection may fail if the server requires a cookie or other authentication, or if the route from Apple TV to the server is different from that for iPad. When that happens, you see the normal basic AirPlay message on the iPad, but nothing on the TV screen.

Since you were able to play the video using basic AirPlay, and were suddenly unable, it sounds like the server suddenly required some web interaction (cookie, etc.) that Apple TV cannot handle. A rather clunky work-around is to specifically enable mirroring, start the video playing, then expand the video player by pinching open so it fills the iPad screen, and center it on the TV. This results in double letterboxing, making the picture smaller than the TV screen, but it does work.

Firstly, I don't believe I omitted to mention that some providers don't allow Basic AirPlay. What I said was...

If you are saying you don't have an option to basic airplay then either the provider doesn't support it or

Secondly.

Second, when you switch the iPad video player to full screen, mirroring automatically changes to basic AirPlay

Obviously, it doesn't. whilst there are further scenarios, by the poster own admission...

some providers don't allow Basic AirPlay.

Thirdly.

That connection may fail if the server requires a cookie or other authentication, or if the route from Apple TV to the server is different from that for iPad.

Why. Basic airplay requires the provider to enable the feature, after making the effort to enable it why would they cripple it by requiring protocols not supported by the Apple TV. The reason basic airplay might fail is because of a network issue.

A rather clunky work-around is...

Please don't waste your time. If the provider has enabled basic airplay, you shouldn't need to jump through hoops, if it doesn't work as it should it's almost certainly a network issue at your end of things, sort it and you should be able to enjoy full screen video again.

Hello Winston. Welcome back, by the way. I see that you disagree with my suggestion that mirroring in iOS switches to basic AirPlay when you go to full screen. This is based on direct experience. If you enable mirroring in the iPad, open vimeo.com in the iPad browser, and play a random video, you see the iPad screen on TV, as expected. But switch the video player to full screen and it says "This video is playing on Apple TV", while the TV shows only the video, without the rest of the iPad screen. If the provider of the video does not support basic AirPlay, the TV screen becomes black, and the video does not play. This can cause full screen playback to fail.

This is what happens on mine. And during this process is when it was (frustratingly) failing. It actually seemed to "try" to do it. Kinda flashed on the T, the iPad said briefly "this vid is playing on Apple TV" but couldn't quite do it.

Thanks again everyone.
