why does my iPhone show the wrong location?

When I sign onto iCloud, I get a message that a device is trying to sign on in another part of the state rather than here. Why does think my iPhone is in a different location? How can I correct this?

iPhone SE, iOS 10.2

The location that is shown is usually either your ISP's head office location (if on Wi-Fi) or Carrier's head office location (if on cellular), not your actual physical location. Apple just reads the IP address being used for the login and then looks up the IP address range.

Just go to https://www.whoismyisp.org on your phone browser and look on the map. That is where Apple sees your login location even if you are not physically there (login location is not to be confused with location services).
