PAN support

I have recently purchased a Cingular BlackJack phone and have found out that the newer phones are starting to support the PAN profile and dropping DUN. The workaround for a BlackJack is to use USB (necessitating a cable), but unfortunately when the phone is connected via USB (as a modem), it cannot charge. So... the bottom line is that the length of time is very limited and not a good solution.

My question is - when is the OSX bluetooth stack going to support PAN? Given this seems to be the direction phone technology is moving, this is becoming more of an issue as time goes on (and a fairly big one for me right now).

I wrote this up for a windows mobile forum, but they should be of some use here:

It now works in OS X as of 10.4.9! I tested on both my Dulie G5 and my MacBookPro with an HTC Wizard/Cingular 8125

Here are the steps I took to make it happen, pretty simple. But it took some playing around to get it.

-----------

Open the Bluetooth Preference Pane, Click Devices, select your device and click Configure.

It will scan your device; Click 'Continue'

It should then display the Conclusion screen that will contain "Use as personal area network"

Click Quit

Click Settings and be sure "Show Bluetooth status in the menu bar" is Checked.

On your WM5 device connect your network using the Internet Sharing application.

Back on your Mac go to the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar, click and select "Join Network on <devicename>"

Your on! Oddly on my Macbook it shows under the Network prefs as a Ethernet Adaptor, but on my G5 it shows as Bluetooth PDA.

Thanks for the update Apple!! 🙂

My understanding is that the PAN profile is now supported in the 10.4.9 update. This will be welcome as in theory I can now use my Samsung Blackjack (which has PAN profile, but no DUN) to reach the network. I've upgrade my system, but now how do I utilize PAN with my Blackjack? It's not obvious and if someone could point me to a FAQ or similar it would be greatly appreciated.

First, Missing Sync is a must to manage your Blackjack.

However, it is not neccessary for surfing the web while tethered to your MacBookPro via Bluetooth. Tethered via USB is faster, but the Bluetooth connection is fairly respectable.

Here are some very simple step-by-step instructions (because with 10.4.9, it really is that simple):

1. If you have not done so already, pair your Blackjack with your Mac. (You may want to re-pair anyway.) A screen will show up at the end of the pairing process to show that you can use personal area networking with the Blackjack.

2. Turn Bluetooth on, and also make sure you have Show Bluetooth status in menu bar checked in your Bluetooth System Preferences. (If you have not already done so)

3. Fire up Internet Sharing (Start | Accessories | Internet Sharing).

4. Under PC Connection, select Bluetooth PAN, and under Network Connection, select your Cingular (or provider) data.

5. Press Connect, and it should say "Device setup finished. On the Mac, connect Bluetooth PAN."

6. Finally, in the Bluetooth icon in your menu bar, select "Join Network on (whatever your device name is)" and you're all set!

I just bought a T-Mobile Dash, and am having the same problem, however I can't figure out how to use the edge network with the phone plugged in via USB, either. The phone doesn't have a DUN profile and only supports PAN. When Apple was really pushing how great bluetooth was, they even discussed PAN, but so far it hasn't been implemented.

So, when are we going to see PAN, Apple?
