Why is Mail different on MAC vs iPad

Why is my mail content different on my Mac book vs my iPad? Drafts are not synced. Some mail will appear as new on the iPad but then not on the Mac. How do I constantly keep them in sync? I thought this was automatic. (Note: this is a hotmail account.) thanks
