I had the same issue. My screen started to pop up and it appeared to be a battery expansion issue. It didn't explode, but the screen eventually cracked completely. I purchased a new iphone 7 as I cannot be without a phone and the retailer somply recommended that we take the old one to be repaired. But when we took the old damaged phone to an Apple Store for repair and the very rude "technician" basically called me a liar and claimed there was nothing wrong with the battery and that we just damaged the phone. I am furious. If I had known that this company was going to provide such poor customer service, I would have never purchased the iPhone 7 and would have gone with a different company. My recommendation is that you take it immediately to a store for repair before the screen cracks or they will likely deny that it was battery and just blame you.

Normally if a phone is damaged solely by an expanding battery Apple stores will replace the phone for the cost of the battery ($79). Note also that an expanding battery will result in the screen popping out, not breaking. And if they examined the battery and found it was not expanded (they don't shrink, BTW)... So I suspect there is more to the story than you are telling us.

So you people are again calling me a liar. I am quite insistent that there

is nothing more to the story. The screen on this phone was popping up off

of the front of the phone. The screen eventually cracked. And BTW, I have

found many similar reports on other boards. I am a long time iPhone user

and IT professional. I do not lie about any technology equipment. I already

have a new phone so there is no real benefit in doing so. It is quite clear

to me that the level of customer service is sorely lacking at this location

and given previous reports of poor service at this location, I shouldn't be

surprised.

I don't in any way think that's endemic to your store ... Apple refuses to warn people about this issue, then says "you should have known about this issue and preempted it." When I attempt to post asking why expanding Li-ion battery information can be found nowhere on the Apple site or product documentation, they delete my post. That seems like willfully hiding something critical to your device. They seem to be OK with your device crushing itself once it's out of warranty ... but they "aren't doing anything to encourage people to upgrade" (per their latest PR foray).

While I haven’t had a similar problem, I have seen quite a few posts from users who took their phone to an Apple store where it was replaced for the cost of a battery ($79). I was also once in a store for an unrelated issue, and I noticed the Genius replacing a phone with an expanded battery. It may be local discretion, and quite possibly related to the user’s politeness (or lack thereof).

I don't believe Apple will replace phones for the cost of a battery ... my two experiences have been to blame the customer for letting the equipment get damaged. Most threads on "battery expansion" or "battery swelling" on the discussion boards end with new equipment purchase. But my main grievance is that after all this very public flogging about Li-ion batteries, and all of Apple's come-to-Jesus disclosure, you still cannot find ANY documentation on ANY official Apple venue/paper saying that battery swelling is a risk and the consumer is possibly (in fact, likely) on the hook for the damage.
