Recommendations in storing 500 cds in one place

My husband has over 500 cds from various artists and is thinking of getting an iPod to store everything in one place. Then eventually be able to purge some of it into storage to have more space in our house. What device would you all recommend? And what do you recommend we do for backup so we do not lose what we have already stored? I would hate to lose all our songs especially if we no longer have our cds readily available.

Thanks

Jaycee,

A CD with 50 minutes of music, when ripped at normal (256 kbps) settings, uses about 100 MB of storage. 500 such CDs will need around 50 GB. Plan accordingly.

If you are saving the CDs, notice that most of the weight and bulk of a purchased CD is in the plastic jewel cases. To save a lot of space, you can keep the discs (and optionally the paperwork) and discard the cases.

Do not dispose of the original CDs. If you do that then you are also disposing of any means you have to show you own the music legally. By all means rip them and then store them in a box in the basement.

How much space they take on the computer depends upon the quality at which you wish to save them which may also depend upon how you wish to use them on other devices such as a car player. It will also depend upon if you you want them instantly to hand and what size storage you have in your computer and how much you are willing to use for CDs. I have a 1 TB drive in my computer so I can have all my CDs actually stored in my computer in good (but not top) quality format. I then have my computer backed up to two external drives, one of which I keep in a fire safe.

Thank you I appreciate your recommendation. I was thinking of storing them in a box but not getting rid of them since as your have mentioned I can show that I have ownership of the music. And it makes me nervous to actually not have them as a means of backup.

I will need to increase the storage on our computer and use external hard drives. Thanks
