I have a glitch on my iMessage screen

My mother and I were messaging tonight. Her on her new iPad and me on my iPhone.
Her iMessage screen is acting up.

First the location services icon was on the screen, but we turned it off. It seems there may be a residual effect.

Here is a screen shot of what her iPad screen looks like. I can't figure out why her keyboard is in the middle of the screen and there is empty space below. As you can see it is also interfering with the messages we are sending and receiving.
We tried deleting the conversation, restarting iMessage and restarting the iPad. The problem persists.
