iTunes 12.5.4.42 Won't Save Setup Settings

I am using the latest version of iTunes and every time I start iTunes I am prompted to accept the user agreement, download, detect the default player, and agree to share my information with Apple (the welcome screen). Even if I don't shutdown my laptop, I have to redo all of this all over again... every single time. This did not happen in earlier versions of iTunes. Do anyone know of a fix for this?

It used to be that resetting preferences by deleting a file called C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunesiTunesPrefs.xml would resolve this sort of problem. However a recent build of iTunes changed the way preferences are stored. Here is a list of the items that I noticed changing a few weeks ago each time I updated something in preferences. Can you see each of these three listed folders inside %appdata%\Apple Computer? If not the permissions for the folders might be wrong. You could try deleting them so they are rebuilt as needed, or create them manually if you don't see them.

  • C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\Cookies
  • C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Preferences
  • C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Preferences\By Host

It may also help to right-click the icon that launches iTunes and use Run as administrator or open it once in safe mode by holding down ctrl+shift as you launch it.

Right-click the iTunes icon in your start menu and click Run as administrator then immediately hold down Ctrl+Shift and continue to hold until you get a prompt about launching iTunes in Safe Mode, click Continue, change some settings, close and then reopen to see if the settings now persist.

After the update to iTunes 12.5.5.5 I am still getting the same setup screens every time I start iTunes. This happens at my work which is a client/server environment and we use Roaming Profiles. We have changed nothing in our network and the iTunes issues only started happening after 12.1. I would go back to 12.1, but my 7+ won't work with that version.

Thoughts?
