Popping Sound, MBP 2016

I have heard a strange noice from my MBP, and am not sure if this is expected or not. Model is MacBook Pro 2016 with Touchbar, 15 inch, Radeon Pro 460, 2.9GhZ i7, 2TB SSD.

The sound occurs rarely, there may be several days or more straight that I don't hear it, though when it occurs, it may happen 2-3 times in a half hour period. There is no association I can make with what I'm doing at the time, so I'm unable to recreate it. The sound is a single hollow "popping" noise, similar to if you slowly squeeze a plastic bottle until it crinkles. The sound is not very loud, but clearly audible, and sounds as if it is coming from approximately behind the trackpad. I've had no other notable problems with this computer to date, have made no modifications to any hardware, or used it in any abnormal way.

I'm not terribly bothered by the sound itself, but I'm aware that the battery is located roughly behind the trackpad, and I worry that an expanding battery might sound like this. The case is not flexed or distorted in any way, there is no abnormal heat being generated, and no smoke, smells, or fumes. I think this is unlikely to be the cause, but is serious enough that I would like an alternative explanation before I disregard it. Alternate explanations might be abnormal activation of haptic feedback, or flexing of internal components as adhesives or seals continue to cure since manufacturing (laptop manufacture date 12-19-2016). The OS X battery status is "Good", "No errors", Simplo model bq20z451, battery manufacture date 12-2-2016.

Thanks for any help!

Macbook Pro 2016 15'. I'm experiencing this random popping sound too (the videos in this thread "show" the issue pretty well). I don't think it has anything to do with warm up. I already chatted with Apple Support and they only recommended software solutions. Didn't want to try those and checked if anything could make the popping noise on my Macbook.

I might have found the source:

The screen / screen hinge. If I press on the in the middle of the screens backplate near the screen hinge (close to or on the edge) I hear a very similar popping sound. Works in opened and closed position.

Please check if this could be the source on your Macbook too and reply to this comment.

I have the same issue. I hear it 3-4 times a day at least and use my late 2016 15inch model as a work machine. Stevie J is probably ROLLING right now.

Apple, please offer a solution. We didn't pay $2,500+ to have random pops coming from the middle of our machines. At least acknowledge you hear the pop. With over 545 people claiming they are also experiencing this problem, you should have released a statement by now — No?

Apple...?

May 18, 2017 6:58 AM in response to doudouzinho

@doudouzinho Yes, I have a sound/clunk of something moving inside when I rotate the laptop along the axis that points out away from my body as i'm holding it. My screen / glass does NOT move, it's something inside.

For others on this thread: Don't assume that all of these things are the same issue. There are at least 3 distinct issues being mentioned here. I'm pretty sure they're all different issues. For example, my popping/clunking sound is definitely thermal expansion. I completely believe others have hinge problems - I don't, but it's completely plausible

Just got my MacBook back from "repair" for the third time. Once again they could not replicate the issue and nothing was done. Imagine my shock. I'm beginning to think that apple is intentionally dismissing this issue until they know what's causing it. That's the only thing I can think of because I have a hard time believing that 3 different technicians could be so incompetent as to not reproduce the noise.

The customer relations rep I've been talking to is supposed to call me back today to follow up so we'll see what he says, but I'm not very hopeful.

Hello,

I heard this shocking popping scary today. 😮 Mine is macbook pro with touch bar 2016. The sound was so loud that entire floor of my office looked at me!

Configuration is: 16GB RAM, 2TB solid state drive, 2.9 GHz processor, so I paid best of the best price. And I get this shock!! 😕

I do not think my laptop has got any dents.

I old macbook pro 2009 never ever made any such scary sounds.

What's wrong with this new macbook ?

Shall I take this to genius bar? From the earlier replies, looks like, nothing positive happens that solves the problem.

Thanks,

Jnanesh

Ok so, i have contacted apple once again and printed some emails to go to a genius store here in Belgium.
The emails contain different people who got a new macbook pro due to this problem. Because the apple retail shop i got it from didn't want to give me one.

They asked to make a video when the sounds happen so as soon as i was hearing it again i recorded it (https://youtu.be/wVvF2IvqpO0).

You can contact me and i'll send you the whole 10 minute video.

Two of our fully spec'd out 15 inch MBP touch bars are producing the popping sound. On one, the keyboard is also making a snap/click when pressing the "a" key and there is sometimes resistance when pressing the "l" key. I scheduled an appointment with a Genius and today when I told him the problem he said that both sounds, the click and the pop, were related to the keyboard. I respectfully disagreed with him but let him run his tests.

After netbooting into what looked like a internal diagnostic tool which showed no problems with the machine, he set machine to the side and started to enter data into his iPad. The macbook restarted and within 20-30 seconds produced the popping sound twice. He looked shocked and I asked him to document it and note that neither of our hands were anywhere near the machine/keyboard when this happened. He then said, I think we are dealing with two separate issues here. He packed up my machine and sent it off. (I was very fortunate that it happened in front of the technician and that he documented it.)

I will report back in 5 days when my machine is back from being repaired. Im not very optimistic about the popping sound from what I have read here but am hoping the keyboard issues are resolved.

My 15" Macbook Pro with Touch bar was purchased end of December 2016. It pops loudly on first opening the screen. Pops when touching the middle of the back. I can also reproduce it when the laptop is open by lightly touching the top of the screen (pressing down gently). However, these pops aren't always reproducible. It's like it needs about 15 minutes between open/pressing for the hinge or whatever is causing it to get back in the malfunctioning state.

Mine also pops slightly under heavy load, but I'm not exactly sure what part of the laptop that is coming from.

My plan is to wait a few more months before I take it in to see if there is a resolution. Right now it seems like people aren't having much luck in fixing the issue.

It's just unfortunate. I loved this Mac until I realized there was a problem. Now, in many ways, I dread using it because it reminds me there is an issue every time I open it up.

I received my MBP 15inch w/ touchbar a couple of weeks ago. After a few days I also noticed popping sounds which seemed to be coming from more than one place. These could have been happening since from day 1 but I may not have noticed.

I could not replicate it, however yesterday I realized that pressing lightly on the bottom of the back of the screen seems to replicate one of the pops/cracks. Another popping seems to be occasionally from the speakers.

In the last few days I have also noticed a popping noise when opening the machine.

I'm extremely annoyed that I have spent a small fortune on a MacBook, the issue seems to be so widespread and Apple don't seem to have an answer. I'm worried that this is a problem with the build and so all machines are having the issue. My main worry is Apple will continue to dismiss it and in time the issue could become terminal for the machines.

I have an appointment through Apple with one of their authorized resellers on Monday morning (as there are no Apple stores in my country, Ireland). I will give an update then.

Really regretting this purchase.

I got my MBP 2016 15inch since January. I didn't noticed the popping sound at first, and when I noticed it for the first time, it was just popping when the computer was heating and it just happened once a week.

But now, the sound happens more and more often, and it is no longer heat related I think (It happens a few times per hour, no matter what I'm doing). This really starts to bother me, but as there is no fixes yet, I think I should wait.

I also have the noise when opening the MBP, and also the sensation that something is moving inside when I am shaking it.

Come on Apple, please do something.

If you live where a TV station has an ITEAM that confronts vendors with consumer issues -- contact them (show them the thread). Same goes for members of Consumer Reports - or any other consumer union.

If I owned one of these - after seeing NOVA (PBS) show on ION batteries - would be concerned that the flexing is also affecting the battery and may eventually cause a fire. (actually same for all really thin devices)

It is also possible the people at the local store are not telling apple there is a problem (or from years of using earbuds - they can no longer hear the noise)

I can easily reproduce the popping sound by heating the CPUs. I’m using the command tool called „yes“ as described by OSXDaily to stress the CPUs.

http://osxdaily.com/2012/10/02/stress-test-mac-cpu/

After 20 - 90 seconds I can hear the popping/cracking sound, which might be located near the touch bar. Sometimes I can also hear that sound when I open the lid or when I press from above or back on the lid.

I consider myself an advanced Mac user. ( 46 yr old, recovering geek) I used to work in Tech Services for a mac developer. If I take my gear to the apple store, you know I've already done extensive testing. In most cases, I know more than the folks at the Genius bar. (but I'm not perfect... I don't know it all... but I've done surgery on many macs and i devices over the years. I miss the days when Apple would jump on a call with me and together we try and troubleshoot the problem. Then they would put our solution into the database for others to benefit from.

Ok, So... onto the popping noise...

I have this problem now as well. (Jan 2016 Macbook Pro 16/2TB Touch Bar W/ Apple Care)

This puppy cost over $4000 with Apple Care, maxed out! A tough nut to swallow, but I'm a big fan, what can I say.

The cracking / Popping sound seems intermittent. After the computer has been sleeping and cooled, upon opening with in 5 minutes, I hear the first pop, and then a few minutes later, a second pop. It seems to be getting louder. I'll try to put my ear to the keyboard next time and try and pinpoint the location. Not easy...

If someone from Apple is monitoring this thread, please contact me directly and I can help you troubleshoot this. I probably won't take mine in to the genius bar until Apple has it as a recognized issue and can provide a solution. The store is loud, the problem is intermittent, and what can they do there? Not much I suspect. Unless I learn differently.

A replacement computer is a good solution, if... they have updated parts since the first batch. Or if Apple has figured it out.

It seems to make the noise 1 or 2 times with in 5 to 10 minutes of using the computer.

Hey guys

I'm experiencing the same issue. The laptop worked fine for a month but now it's starting popping every single day, a big disappointment since I've paid $3000.

I'm currently in China and after reaching out to the Apple support team they said I can either get it fixed here or when I go back to Seattle.

I pushed a little and the man went ask their manager, whom will call me within a day.

I'll keep you guys posted.

btw, it seems like some oil issue in the hinge, some guy on the Chinese forums dipped oil in the hinge and fixed the problem.

If they won't replace my laptop, I might try that trick.

Disappointed, my last one worked just fine, and it's the cheapest Macbook Pro.
