Popping Sound, MBP 2016

I have heard a strange noice from my MBP, and am not sure if this is expected or not. Model is MacBook Pro 2016 with Touchbar, 15 inch, Radeon Pro 460, 2.9GhZ i7, 2TB SSD.

The sound occurs rarely, there may be several days or more straight that I don't hear it, though when it occurs, it may happen 2-3 times in a half hour period. There is no association I can make with what I'm doing at the time, so I'm unable to recreate it. The sound is a single hollow "popping" noise, similar to if you slowly squeeze a plastic bottle until it crinkles. The sound is not very loud, but clearly audible, and sounds as if it is coming from approximately behind the trackpad. I've had no other notable problems with this computer to date, have made no modifications to any hardware, or used it in any abnormal way.

I'm not terribly bothered by the sound itself, but I'm aware that the battery is located roughly behind the trackpad, and I worry that an expanding battery might sound like this. The case is not flexed or distorted in any way, there is no abnormal heat being generated, and no smoke, smells, or fumes. I think this is unlikely to be the cause, but is serious enough that I would like an alternative explanation before I disregard it. Alternate explanations might be abnormal activation of haptic feedback, or flexing of internal components as adhesives or seals continue to cure since manufacturing (laptop manufacture date 12-19-2016). The OS X battery status is "Good", "No errors", Simplo model bq20z451, battery manufacture date 12-2-2016.

Thanks for any help!

Macbook Pro 2016 15'. I'm experiencing this random popping sound too (the videos in this thread "show" the issue pretty well). I don't think it has anything to do with warm up. I already chatted with Apple Support and they only recommended software solutions. Didn't want to try those and checked if anything could make the popping noise on my Macbook.

I might have found the source:

The screen / screen hinge. If I press on the in the middle of the screens backplate near the screen hinge (close to or on the edge) I hear a very similar popping sound. Works in opened and closed position.

Please check if this could be the source on your Macbook too and reply to this comment.

Hi,

I think I understand your Italian and understand your frustration. I guess the screen casings were faulty in 2016 , early 2017. You notice no one has complained about popping on the recently updated kabylake mac books. I think my replaced screen is a 2017 version. Try again at Genius they may get it right this time. Apple secretly know the issue and have fixed it.

I have been reading every single post in this thread and been through all 46 pages. Actually it seems to either be at random, I have had my display replaced recently and like many others it no longer pops. Hopefully, it will continue to be like this, if not then I'd be quite disappointed. I weant through quite a lengthy process just to get to this point. I had the top case replace twice because they thought it would fix it at first then when they tried replacing the displayed they chipped the back of the top case! Thankfully they replaced it within two days but the whole process took me over a whole month to sort it out. I wish Apple just authorised a replacement MacBook at their resellers since their store is far from me, even though I purchased it directly.

Thought I would add my two–cents to this thread, for what it's worth.

I recently took my MBP into my local Apple Store and tried to replicate the issue in store. Obviously, with the noise in the store they were unable to replicate the problem. Therefore, I left it with them for a couple of days. They basically came back to me saying that I wasn't the only person to experience this issue globally (I did point them at this forum thread) and that Apple Care Engineering were aware of the problem and working on a fix. They seem to think it's a problem with the hinge mechanism. Until they come up with a solution, I've been told to just wait it out and keep an eye on the Support site or a recall.

Pretty frustrating having spent £2.5K on this thing.

It can be hard to replicate the issue if your macbook is not already cold or you have no program to get the fans working. I'd suggest that you contact Apple directly via the chat and discuss your experience with them at the store. They should tell you that the issue is known and that the display should be replaced. As many of the people before me have pointed out, the display replacement has fixed the issue.

Grazie!!!

I also have the same issue with my 15" MacBook Pro 2016. I shoot some video as proof of the sound and then went to Apple Store to ask for a solution. They ended up helping me replace the display and the problem went away for now. I hope it will permanently fix this issue. Hope yours can also be fixed as well. Good luck!

Checking back in with an update.

It's been around 10 days since I received the system with the replaced top case. I've started hearing some faint squeaking or creaking from the hinges when the system is under load with a few cpu intensive programs running. I had subjected the system to the same 'test' when I received it and there was no creaking, so I'm sure something has changed in the last 10 days of usage. It's not as loud and obnoxious as the popping sound, but It feels like a sign that the issue will propagate. Needless to say, in over 15 years of using Macs this has probably been my worst overall customer experience.

Bring my My BPR TB 15 2016, last Monday evening to an APR , BIMP in Grenoble-France

Problem was : Clac ! at opening, Pop ! when heating, Crack ! when opening and pressing back of screen, bling bling! when tapping the trackpad and palm rest, or moving the MBP, or putting it on a table

A real orchestra !!

Got it back tonight..

They changed the top case for the bling ! and the pop ! (Yes, a new battery for me)

And the display for the rest of noises !

Should be 1100€ without warranty

Verdict : no more noise, even under load. So far so good ! (in French : jusqu'ici tout va bien, jusqu'ici tout va bien, jusqu'ici tout va bien...)

I have to point the excellent contact of the people working at the APR, their great professional conscience, and a much much better take into account of the issue (MUCH better than people from Apple phone customer support)
