Popping Sound, MBP 2016

I have heard a strange noice from my MBP, and am not sure if this is expected or not. Model is MacBook Pro 2016 with Touchbar, 15 inch, Radeon Pro 460, 2.9GhZ i7, 2TB SSD.

The sound occurs rarely, there may be several days or more straight that I don't hear it, though when it occurs, it may happen 2-3 times in a half hour period. There is no association I can make with what I'm doing at the time, so I'm unable to recreate it. The sound is a single hollow "popping" noise, similar to if you slowly squeeze a plastic bottle until it crinkles. The sound is not very loud, but clearly audible, and sounds as if it is coming from approximately behind the trackpad. I've had no other notable problems with this computer to date, have made no modifications to any hardware, or used it in any abnormal way.

I'm not terribly bothered by the sound itself, but I'm aware that the battery is located roughly behind the trackpad, and I worry that an expanding battery might sound like this. The case is not flexed or distorted in any way, there is no abnormal heat being generated, and no smoke, smells, or fumes. I think this is unlikely to be the cause, but is serious enough that I would like an alternative explanation before I disregard it. Alternate explanations might be abnormal activation of haptic feedback, or flexing of internal components as adhesives or seals continue to cure since manufacturing (laptop manufacture date 12-19-2016). The OS X battery status is "Good", "No errors", Simplo model bq20z451, battery manufacture date 12-2-2016.

Thanks for any help!

Macbook Pro 2016 15'. I'm experiencing this random popping sound too (the videos in this thread "show" the issue pretty well). I don't think it has anything to do with warm up. I already chatted with Apple Support and they only recommended software solutions. Didn't want to try those and checked if anything could make the popping noise on my Macbook.

I might have found the source:

The screen / screen hinge. If I press on the in the middle of the screens backplate near the screen hinge (close to or on the edge) I hear a very similar popping sound. Works in opened and closed position.

Please check if this could be the source on your Macbook too and reply to this comment.

I was able to reproduce the popping noise almost evert time by starting the laptop from a shut down state, then running the Cinebench benchmarking application immediately and performing the CPU/GPU benchmarking tests in a loop.

I believe this caused the laptop to heat up and then cause it to pop!

Not sure whether this will work for you, but you can give it a shot.

I was also able to reproduce the popping noise consistently, when I first opened up the display and the laptop were cold there was a "pop". Then when the computer got warmer during heavier tasks there were several "pops" and during the cooldown there were "pops" aswell.... I could even force the pops sometimes by just touching the screen. Boy, was I slowly crawling up the walls? God yes I was....

I will check back here in a months time or so for an status update.

MacBook Pro 15 inch retina with touch bar having the same problems.

I dropped my laptop in the Apple Store (Sydney Chatswood Chase) for a two-day further diagnose. But then they told me they found nothing and I was frustrated. And it was not a technician discussing the issue with me on phone, it was the sales people telling the "result" and he kept saying "I am not the technician so I cannot help you with the technical problem". And they said they offered to "erase the laptop to make sure the software part is ok and no further problem will come up again."

I can't understand why you geniuses can't verify the popping sound after all two-day testing that I am suffering everyday and which has been reported by thousands of ppl on the apple forum (I have already showed them this thread but they said they can't agree the opinions because there are too many different answers). Unless I'm having some kinds of illusions or they are telling me that I am lying. Even since you can't verify it ,refusing to admit there're any problems, the suggestion of erasing my laptop is absolutely no logic and useless.

I run businesses online every single day. For each day of repairing, it causes me great money and turns out buying a $400 apple care service is such of no use (last time I bought the MacBook Pro 13 inch retina and after one year the battery went down, out of warranty. So this time I decided to buy the APPLECARE and it completely disappointed me).

I'm done with APPLE products but I'm not done with this issue. I told them if they can't find the problem then I will record it in a video and send it to another Apple Store. Completely a waste of time and money.

I think I should switch to another windows machine. At this price a lot of options.

Too depressed, after the warranty to the third time (4 times go to Apple Authorised Service Provider) and took nearly a month each time to carry the warranty.

No apologies, no additional support, no alternative laptop to work.

No representative of the company in my country.

The excuse for warranty refusal because not to find fault although described very well.

After all, I would sell iphone, ipad, **** macbook pro to switch to other vendors, stop writing software for appstore.

Now, still waiting for warranty...

First, bug popping sound, try to work without warranty

Next, the keyboard spacebar error, try to work without warranty

Next the touch screen flashes, trying to work without warranty

Then one day without charge, carry a warranty

After 3 weeks of warranty popping sound is still there

To another Apple Authorized Service Provider, they refuse the warranty due to warranty elsewhere. Went home in frustration.

Get back to the old Apple Authorized Service Provider, described, for a second warranty

After 3 days, they refused the warranty because they did not find fault. Had brought a machine and a certificate of no error home

Got a video clip of bug popping sound and brought back the warranty again ..

Wait for the third warranty ..

During the process of contacting online support several times, they once said that only software support does not solve the hardware problem. Too angry.

Also requested to replace the new machine many times but they do not agree

I can not believe the $ 3000 machine is full of errors.

After the frustrating popping noise, I visited the genius bar this past August. They replaced the screen, and the repair cost was around $695 with a $100 labor charge. They covered it under the 1 year warranty.

When I received the laptop back, everything was great up until this past week. The popping sound is there again, and it usually happens on a cold start. Slightly more of a faint sound than the last time, but time will tell if it gets worse.

Back to the genius bar I go.

Now they admitted the error and replaced the Top case and Battery. I don't understand why they don't change the screen as other ppl who get a successful repair. But I think, ok I am not the genius it is ok as long as it works.

BUT, just one day after the pick up, the popping sound is STILL there, as frequent as before. Oh my god. To be honest I am furious, it wastes me a total week and the whole transportation and it comes out they CHEAT me.

No more Apple products.

I went to my local Apple Store, and the Genius Bar person said he was "aware" of the issue but hadn't seen one in person yet.

We quickly came to an agreement to ship it in for repair.

Apple replaced the bottom cover with a note about warping, but it certainly wasn't warped that I could notice (my late-2016 is like new, used primarily at home).

Of course, the problem wasn't solved. The popping noise is still there. It's very obviously coming from the screen assembly. Like others noted, if I press gently on the "MacBook Pro" logo, it will sometimes make the popping noise. There's a bit of creaking around the hinge in the back as well.

I called AppleCare, and they just suggested returning to the Apple store to further work on the issue (likely requiring it to be sent back in).

I'm frustrated. Do I just deal with the noise, hoping Apple officially acknowledges the problems and offers a repair program? Or roll the dice with another repair the may or may not fix it?

Very annoying for a $4k machine.

If you can deal with it, maybe wait it out. A little ways back in this thread (I'll try finding it later), one user already pin pointed what the issue is. The tip of the spring or something located in the display assembly is too sharp and is creating the popping noise. He smoothed it out with a file and the noise disappeared. Another user noted that the noise disappeared completely after several months of use and it's speculated that the sharp edge smooths itself out after a period of time.

Alternatively, you can demand they replace the top case and display and hopefully get the "good" parts. I have the 2017 model and haven't experienced the popping issue yet (I've had it for over a month). Just a fair warning though, the new issue I'm experiencing is arguably more annoying than the popping was on my 2016 model. It's a faint "crackle" that happens pretty much constantly, without rhyme or reason. It's super frustrating and makes me want to chuck my MacBook at a tree.
