Popping Sound, MBP 2016

I have heard a strange noice from my MBP, and am not sure if this is expected or not. Model is MacBook Pro 2016 with Touchbar, 15 inch, Radeon Pro 460, 2.9GhZ i7, 2TB SSD.

The sound occurs rarely, there may be several days or more straight that I don't hear it, though when it occurs, it may happen 2-3 times in a half hour period. There is no association I can make with what I'm doing at the time, so I'm unable to recreate it. The sound is a single hollow "popping" noise, similar to if you slowly squeeze a plastic bottle until it crinkles. The sound is not very loud, but clearly audible, and sounds as if it is coming from approximately behind the trackpad. I've had no other notable problems with this computer to date, have made no modifications to any hardware, or used it in any abnormal way.

I'm not terribly bothered by the sound itself, but I'm aware that the battery is located roughly behind the trackpad, and I worry that an expanding battery might sound like this. The case is not flexed or distorted in any way, there is no abnormal heat being generated, and no smoke, smells, or fumes. I think this is unlikely to be the cause, but is serious enough that I would like an alternative explanation before I disregard it. Alternate explanations might be abnormal activation of haptic feedback, or flexing of internal components as adhesives or seals continue to cure since manufacturing (laptop manufacture date 12-19-2016). The OS X battery status is "Good", "No errors", Simplo model bq20z451, battery manufacture date 12-2-2016.

Thanks for any help!

Macbook Pro 2016 15'. I'm experiencing this random popping sound too (the videos in this thread "show" the issue pretty well). I don't think it has anything to do with warm up. I already chatted with Apple Support and they only recommended software solutions. Didn't want to try those and checked if anything could make the popping noise on my Macbook.

I might have found the source:

The screen / screen hinge. If I press on the in the middle of the screens backplate near the screen hinge (close to or on the edge) I hear a very similar popping sound. Works in opened and closed position.

Please check if this could be the source on your Macbook too and reply to this comment.

I have the same problem when tilt the lap from left to right with lid opened or up and down with the lid closed.

I bought my 2017 rMBP i5, 13.3" with 256gb only 2 weeks ago and the problem arisen today !!

I see the problem is common to many customers... Apple says it is a design problem, but why do not solve it !??

i do not want a fix on display or the fixes that does not solve the problem !

I can add that I do have some other issues. My "Y" key will not work if you press on the lower left corner. The touchpad also has dead spots where it won't click. Both issues have occurred in one or both of the last two MBP Touches. Not sure how much area the battery covers but my gut though it's not the battery even though I have seen one expand before. There were posts online that said the sound is from thermal expansion/contraction in how internally the screen hinges are attached (glued). I've only heard it with the screen open; not when it is connected to my LG 5K display.

I solved the issue by buying the new mbp yesterday ))) Gave the popping one to my wife -- she said she's totally ok with these sounds.

And yes, to be honest, it's embracing for Apple officials to be acting like this.

THIS IS AN ASSEMBLY ISSUE — and such a great company must accept it and replace the broken models all over the world for free of course.

Finally got my MBP early 2017 touch bar replaced. I had this issue after sending the laptop back due to the right shift key not working. I'm convinced these things are an absolute waste of money.

Credit where credit is due though, Apple did try and replace mine and owing to the fact mine was customised they had to remake and then swap mine. That's about where my positives stop though. 5 visits to the Mac store and several months later I've finally got a replacement laptop. I'm starting to notice that little crackle just under where your right palm would sit when typing after only 1 week of use. Hopefully it doesn't get too distracting.. THESE THINGS ARE PATHETIC. AVOID IF AT ALL POSSIBLE AND RECOMMEND THEM TO NOBODY.

A logic board change did NOT resolve this for me.To make matter worst , Apple returned the laptop after 2 weeks with a wonky wireless antenna or card that made it impossible to see any wifi networks nearby. Took it back and explained to the technician with screenshots of the thread here and he was quick to agree that the display/lid assembly is the issue. The lid/display assembly was replaced and so far seems ok. Although, like others here , I have to say only time will tell if it holds up.

I have the same issue. I've done everything Apple said to do over the phone, did remote connect and they played with it, took it in to the store for service and of course...it didn't do it. Worked like a champ in the store. Speaker "popped" as soon as i got home. Ive tried everything....

its a sound card/software issue...Apple please investigate!

After a failed attempt at my local Apple authorized dealer, I finally set up an appointment and made a 45 mins trip to the nearest Apple store.

The guy knew right away about the issue. Two of my USB-C ports were also loose, so my maxed out 2016 MBP will go into $1400 CAD worth of repair (display, top case with battery and I/O board). Hopefully it’ll fix it for good. Knock on wood.

So I left my MBP at the Apple store on Wednesday and got an email yesterday that it was ready for pickup. Around 3 days total. Much faster than anticipated.

The good news: no poppinng sound so far. Only the display was replaced. My right USB ports have been replaced and seem to be workinng fine.

The bad news: New issues have arisenn. Notice how there's a bunch of "nn" typos which I left intentionally. The "N" key works sporadically and when it does, it sometimes doubles up. Reset the SMC and PRAM, ran Onyx, the issue is still there. My "5" key wasn't even working properly out of the box but it seems to fine now. Anything else I should try out?

There's a small dent in onne of the corners which clearly wasnn't there, as if it's been bumped, as well as scuffs around where the screws are located on the bottom case. Wish I would've taken photos before sending it in as I take extremely care of my stuff and there was no cosmetic damage. On the estimation sheet it even said "Cosmetic Condition: Nothing to mention.". Withoutanny proof though it looks like this is a lost cause.

Since the nearest Apple Store is an hour away, I'll have to wait until next week to bring it in again if the "N" key issue doesn't fade away.

All in all, not the happiest camper. Don't know yet if I should request to replace the whole machine.

Hello All,

I had experienced this problem almost immediately after buying a 2016 MacBook Pro in December of 2016. First, I took it in for repair in February 2017 and they replaced the upper case. This did not fix the popping sound.

During the next 10 months, then computer continued to make the popping sound. I recently took it in again in November 2017 before the end of my 1 year warranty. This time, they decided to replace the display. So far (approx. 2 weeks) this has remedied the popping sound. Crossing my fingers that this has solved the problem.

For what it is worth, my screen was also a bit "loose." That helped with the Genius Bar diagnosing the problem. Thought I do not know the exact problem that caused the popping sound, I suspect it may be with the way the display was connected to the rest of the laptop. Also possible it was a defective hinge assembly. Apple did not specify the exact cause.

For now, just happy that the problem has been resolved because, outside of the popping sound, I think this is a phenomenal machine.
