Popping Sound, MBP 2016

I have heard a strange noice from my MBP, and am not sure if this is expected or not. Model is MacBook Pro 2016 with Touchbar, 15 inch, Radeon Pro 460, 2.9GhZ i7, 2TB SSD.

The sound occurs rarely, there may be several days or more straight that I don't hear it, though when it occurs, it may happen 2-3 times in a half hour period. There is no association I can make with what I'm doing at the time, so I'm unable to recreate it. The sound is a single hollow "popping" noise, similar to if you slowly squeeze a plastic bottle until it crinkles. The sound is not very loud, but clearly audible, and sounds as if it is coming from approximately behind the trackpad. I've had no other notable problems with this computer to date, have made no modifications to any hardware, or used it in any abnormal way.

I'm not terribly bothered by the sound itself, but I'm aware that the battery is located roughly behind the trackpad, and I worry that an expanding battery might sound like this. The case is not flexed or distorted in any way, there is no abnormal heat being generated, and no smoke, smells, or fumes. I think this is unlikely to be the cause, but is serious enough that I would like an alternative explanation before I disregard it. Alternate explanations might be abnormal activation of haptic feedback, or flexing of internal components as adhesives or seals continue to cure since manufacturing (laptop manufacture date 12-19-2016). The OS X battery status is "Good", "No errors", Simplo model bq20z451, battery manufacture date 12-2-2016.

Thanks for any help!

Macbook Pro 2016 15'. I'm experiencing this random popping sound too (the videos in this thread "show" the issue pretty well). I don't think it has anything to do with warm up. I already chatted with Apple Support and they only recommended software solutions. Didn't want to try those and checked if anything could make the popping noise on my Macbook.

I might have found the source:

The screen / screen hinge. If I press on the in the middle of the screens backplate near the screen hinge (close to or on the edge) I hear a very similar popping sound. Works in opened and closed position.

Please check if this could be the source on your Macbook too and reply to this comment.

You should be happy that you have Genius Bar (in Poland we have only authorized services) and everything works even if it lasts only 6 months. Better than non stop cracking 😉 I have to record my popping sound but sometimes I can hear it 2-3 times during one hour sometimes no sound during whole day. Anyway during work and at home I don't bother too much. As I see it's popular issue and in fact it doesn't cause problems...or I don't know something 😉

After 1 week without laptop they told me 'sorry I can't replicate the sound', I was super nervous and angry because I shared this forum thread and Youtube videos and they didn't consider it as a proof, they need my personal problem replica.

So I go back home and with the patience of a fisherman, tried to capture the sound and I did.

I sent the video files and waited another 2 weeks to replacement...

When I was waiting the screen piece I said, 'I need my laptop to work, can I take it in the meantime? or the weekend you are closed...' the answer was no.

I have the same clac sound at opening the lid. I can replicate once or twice after opening for the first time and if I close the lid and move the laptop around a little and open again, the sound is there again.

Should I go to the Store and ask for a repair / replacement?

I can't have my laptop away not a single day because is my main work machine.

Or should I stay like this and use the warranty another time?

Another than that my MBP works perfectly.

I have the same issue with the low crackling sound. I've had it since day one. I bought mine shortly after the launch.

It seems to always present itself right after a speaker event. For example, I noticed that it almost always happen a few seconds after I get a notification chime. So, I would hear the ding after getting a new email and then about 15 seconds later, crackle.

At this point, Apple seems to only respond to lawsuits. Perhaps someone can get a class action going? It will then be resolved lickety-split.

I have the exact same issue, and also found it to be the bottom middle of the screen. If I push it lightly from the back in this spot I can reproduce the 'pop' noice. There must be some glue that has come undone with heat as the laptop is used. It pops multiple times a day on its own without me touching that part of the screen. So annoying. Any ideas how to fix? My Macbook Pro 13" with TouchBar is now 3 weeks over the 1yr warranty 😟

Exact same as mine. I push on the backside of the display behind the Macbook Pro logo and I can hear it creak and pop..not sometimes, without fail. And its getting work...like the layers are progressively coming more apart. Also the random pops are louder and more frequent.....

I have to now deal with the AppleCare people, as mentioned before, I was a day or two over my 1yr before logging a ticket, and at the Genius Bar they told me I'm out of luck......

So, after second attempt, recorded proof of popping, the Apple changed the LCD and antenna, one month before warranty expiration. And it was fixed, no more popping. Right now, after 3 months of usage, the popping returned. No more warranty, however I am not in favor of replacing the screen and top lid every 3 months 🙂.

I am still curious, what is the percentage of faulty units, or maybe people are just not noticing this issue? Apparently it is some kind of design flaw... and still not corrected in MacBook Pro 2017, maybe 2018 will bring some new improvements 😉

Anyway, Apple, shame on you, if you are reading this...

Jono, thanks very much for the response from you end - very much appreciated getting input from another individual experiencing similar from S.A.

Since my last post I've started experiencing the sticky- / non-responsive keys issue as well, and evidence of the whole "staingate" situation... I'm honestly FLABBERGASTED by these problems!!! I cannot believe just how these issues can still exist after we've essentially moved into the second-generation of the same design - and the staingate issue is YEARS older than that even!

APPALLING!

I've also been looking for means to contact you directly... Unfortunately the major redesign to these forums has left me struggling to find a solution, and with it being almost 5am here I'm not going to spend much more time figuring it out... Just posting this reply now and will get back to it in the morning ideally.

I took my laptop to the Apple Store on Friday and they said they have not seen this before. They ran a diagnostic test which came back with nothing. Ironically my laptop popped two times during the test.

I was told that because my laptop was out of warranty by 5 months, that I would have to potentially pay $795 to have my laptop sent in for repairs. The tech at the store said that before sending it in, they would reinstall the OS to see if it is a software issue. As we all know its not so I declined.

At this point I'm just going to live with it because I don't think I should have to pay to have this defect fixed (if it's even reparable from what I'm seeing from other responses).

Here is a video of my laptop, which I presented to the Apple Store.

So I went to the Apple store and left my macbook there for a week, they said in the diagnosis that the sounds from opening the lid where verified and really happening, and the pops coming from the speakers. So they gave me back the laptop saying that they adjusted the screws from the hinge and the sound it's not there anymore. But is still there, as well the pops from the speakers. I have to say the clac coming from the hinge when opening the lid after a few hours is not as loud as before.

But I am kind of disappointed with apple support.

Hey

Since i purchased my macbook pro touchbar 15" 2016 (30/12/2016) i have popping noise issue and since the beginning of this month (january 2018) i just experienced sticky keys and bad input with the spacebar, it even blocked itself 2 times in 5 days, i had to press 20-30 times to unblock this **** spacebar...

i already contacted apple 3 times for this issue.

17th july 2017

✖ First time they told me to move my *** to the closest premium seller or go to the apple store (that is 2hrs from my home ... (there is only one in belgium) So i opted for the premium seller. They did Apple diagnostic and everything but they was too dumb to find something or notice the **** popping sound occurring frequently and obviously noticeable if you tend your ear a bit while using/testing it😠😠.

After one week i got my laptop back with a beautiful useless paper certifying there was no problem.

9th january 2018

✖ Second time after getting a second issue with this **** machine that is sticky keys and spacebar blocking itself and being unresponsive i decided to call apple back, by being more persuasive than the other time i asked for true support and to have apple to handle the case and not just a premium reseller that is useless. They asked me to get some proofs and then recontact them and ask for a support chief (one of the boss for the support team ? (english is not my main language sorry :/ ). They told me that by having proofs they could help and fix the machine.

13rd january 2018

✖ I tough i had everything in my hand because i finally had everything, videos showing popping sound and showing spacebar problem but after all this the support chief told me that he was unable to help by phone ...

maaan come on i have proofs, just send me ups like one of your mate did for my apple watch last summer ....

Nope move to an apple premium seller or to the apple store.

So next i m gonna have to go to the apple store and find competent people to try to get this f**** mac fixed.

This is my work machine as computer graphic designer and i also use it a lot for the university where i study Advertisement ... the popping sound is occurring very often .... too often and it s making me crazy.

Anyone knows a trick to have the same amazing support apple had before?

Jan 14, 2018 12:24 PM in response to WereOnAPeopleFarm

Book an appointment to your local Apple Store and they should identify the problem quickly by replacing the display. YMMV though.

As for me, I just made my 7th 1hr trip to the store. Feel like new issues are popping whenever I take it back thanks to incompetent repair technicians. Casing’s been scuffed at multiple places. Speakers not working properly. Stuck/mushy keys when the machine heats up. Screen has been scratched this time despite being replaced originally because of the popping sound. I feel like I’m playing Russian roulette.

At least the people I’ve been dealing with are understandable and helpful. Let’s see in what state it’ll be in this time around.
