Popping Sound, MBP 2016

I have heard a strange noice from my MBP, and am not sure if this is expected or not. Model is MacBook Pro 2016 with Touchbar, 15 inch, Radeon Pro 460, 2.9GhZ i7, 2TB SSD.

The sound occurs rarely, there may be several days or more straight that I don't hear it, though when it occurs, it may happen 2-3 times in a half hour period. There is no association I can make with what I'm doing at the time, so I'm unable to recreate it. The sound is a single hollow "popping" noise, similar to if you slowly squeeze a plastic bottle until it crinkles. The sound is not very loud, but clearly audible, and sounds as if it is coming from approximately behind the trackpad. I've had no other notable problems with this computer to date, have made no modifications to any hardware, or used it in any abnormal way.

I'm not terribly bothered by the sound itself, but I'm aware that the battery is located roughly behind the trackpad, and I worry that an expanding battery might sound like this. The case is not flexed or distorted in any way, there is no abnormal heat being generated, and no smoke, smells, or fumes. I think this is unlikely to be the cause, but is serious enough that I would like an alternative explanation before I disregard it. Alternate explanations might be abnormal activation of haptic feedback, or flexing of internal components as adhesives or seals continue to cure since manufacturing (laptop manufacture date 12-19-2016). The OS X battery status is "Good", "No errors", Simplo model bq20z451, battery manufacture date 12-2-2016.

Thanks for any help!

Macbook Pro 2016 15'. I'm experiencing this random popping sound too (the videos in this thread "show" the issue pretty well). I don't think it has anything to do with warm up. I already chatted with Apple Support and they only recommended software solutions. Didn't want to try those and checked if anything could make the popping noise on my Macbook.

I might have found the source:

The screen / screen hinge. If I press on the in the middle of the screens backplate near the screen hinge (close to or on the edge) I hear a very similar popping sound. Works in opened and closed position.

Please check if this could be the source on your Macbook too and reply to this comment.

The screen is absolutely the problem. I had the notorious popping, and luckily a couple missing pixels on the display so they replaced it because of that issue. The screen and the aluminum top are one a one piece replacement. The noise is most annoying, but I don't think it hurts the unit.

Why not print out a bunch of these postings of people who had the problem resolved and take them to Apple along with deep insistence that you see the store manager.

Hello, thanks for answering guys.

I called two different people of Apple staff in Cupertino. They told me I need to wait the third repair. If it doesn't solve the problem, they will discuss a replacement possibility.

Right now, after reportedly 2 screen changes, they're suppose to be changing the antenna and the fans. That's bizarre.

They opened my new computer at least three times ba now.

I'm sure to be checking every single detail as well as the hinge and scratchs and dents.

I won't accept anything less than I paid for.

Regards,

Updating my case:

I went to Apple on 29 March to have my computer back from the third repair.

I was told by the manager that according to the technicians, the popping sounds and cracking sounds moving the screen were an 'expected behavior'.

When they brought my computer, before I even open the lid, I notice a big dent, damage on the top of the computer. I was already on a call with a senior apple care advisor whileI was waiting the computer.

I was narrating to them what was going on in real time even before the manager come with the computer.

Then she saw the damage, waited while I was talking with the advisor and minutes later came with a new unit, without many complaints or arguments. The reason was that the computer was "damaged durain repair".

They gave me a new receipt and full warranty.

But even then, it is not a guarantee that is not going's to happen again.

I really don't know what would happen if I had taken the computer back home and noticed the damage later. Probably the warranty would have gotten avoided and I would have to keep a defective product or pay them to repair. That's terrible.

I'll keep the track of the new unit in this forum for sure.

They need to do a recall for this.

Had the same thing happen to my MacBook 15inch last year. Had to spend a few months going back and forth to the nearest Apple store. They tried changing the mother board at first, which of course didn't rectify the issue.

I called apple care and demanded to speak to someone 'higher up', in order to escalate the issue. After sending across a few videos of the defect, other online references proving this defect to be more widespread than they'd like to admit and multiple phone calls later, they finally agreed to change the entire top case. That got rid of the problem for good.

I'm just glad I was able to push this fix through before my warranty ended.

Sorry to hear about your incident. It really feels bad having such experiences despite paying for one of the most durable machine. I am currently experiencing the same popping sound on my macbook pro 13. This is my first apple device and I really dont want it to continue popping! Hope Apple helps me out in this. I have an appointment this weekend.

Update from me:

I dropped off my 2017 15" MBP on May 16th and it was ready for pickup on May 26th.

My issues included: Popping sound, keyboard issues (repeating X and B keys), screen changing tint/color abruptly, trackpad becoming unresponsive when the machine is cold.

They replaced: The entire top case which includes the keyboard and battery, the entire screen and screen case.

I havent had any issues yet and the keyboard itself seems more... muffled? Less clicky/plasticky?

I'll report back if issues arise again.

Hello everyone,

I had this same issue -> The not so frequent popping sound near the left side of the keyboard (was not able to figure exact spot though). I went to Apple Genius store and gave it to them and I got the macbook pro back today. The way I used to reproduce the noise is I usually run Xcode -> Run a heavy program, Unity -> start a game, open animation software and start it, and thats how the macbook starts its fan as heats up. Though all this is not necessary, this was my guaranteed process to make me hear those pop sound once in 4-5 mins.
Now I tried running those apps, I didn't heard any popping sound.

The repair sheet tells that they replaced -"Display Assembly".

I dont know how that is connected with the sound near left speaker but I think my mbp has stopped making that weird noise. However, its only 15mins of use after the shipment got delivered. I will update this if I listen the sound again.

Mine does the same thing.

It's getting to the point that it sounds like popcorn in the microwave.

I use my laptop everyday for video editing and audio post production, so I can't take it to the Genius Bar and leave it for a few days.

I miss my 2015 MBP... before that one I had one of the ones with the bad video cards that fried.

I've either had bad luck with Apple laptops, or they are going downhill fast with QC.

I’m having this problem as well. At first I thought it was coming from the touchpad and realized that the sound is completely different. I don’t think that iit is as loud as some others have stated. But I certainly notice it and usually can replicate it on my own. I’m 2 hrs from the nearest Apple Store. I’ve had bad luck with authorized service providers, especially in cases like this. They would likely tell me to live with it and/or make it worse with shoddy work.

Just want to share that I got my 15" MBP TB 2017 serviced for the popping sound as well as the issues with the keyboard and some issues with the screen.

The popping sound is completely fixed. I have not experienced it since I got the computer back about a month ago, whereas before it would happen 3-4 times during my workday.

The keyboard has been working fine, but then again it worked fine for like 5 months after I got the computer so only time will tell if it keeps working.

The screen was displaying very faint horizontal lines only visible when looking at solid colors. This was fixed by replacing the entire screen but I still experience another issue, when the computer starts getting hot, something will happen and the entire screen changes color/tint in the split of a second. I'm looking at a solid white image, the image will look pink abruptly turn slightly pink and then gradually go back to white over the next few minutes. It's like the logic board starts flexing when it heats up and it causes a cable to short or something.

I'll be taking it back in to have this issue looked at but aside from that everything else is great.
