Popping Sound, MBP 2016

I have heard a strange noice from my MBP, and am not sure if this is expected or not. Model is MacBook Pro 2016 with Touchbar, 15 inch, Radeon Pro 460, 2.9GhZ i7, 2TB SSD.

The sound occurs rarely, there may be several days or more straight that I don't hear it, though when it occurs, it may happen 2-3 times in a half hour period. There is no association I can make with what I'm doing at the time, so I'm unable to recreate it. The sound is a single hollow "popping" noise, similar to if you slowly squeeze a plastic bottle until it crinkles. The sound is not very loud, but clearly audible, and sounds as if it is coming from approximately behind the trackpad. I've had no other notable problems with this computer to date, have made no modifications to any hardware, or used it in any abnormal way.

I'm not terribly bothered by the sound itself, but I'm aware that the battery is located roughly behind the trackpad, and I worry that an expanding battery might sound like this. The case is not flexed or distorted in any way, there is no abnormal heat being generated, and no smoke, smells, or fumes. I think this is unlikely to be the cause, but is serious enough that I would like an alternative explanation before I disregard it. Alternate explanations might be abnormal activation of haptic feedback, or flexing of internal components as adhesives or seals continue to cure since manufacturing (laptop manufacture date 12-19-2016). The OS X battery status is "Good", "No errors", Simplo model bq20z451, battery manufacture date 12-2-2016.

Thanks for any help!

Macbook Pro 2016 15'. I'm experiencing this random popping sound too (the videos in this thread "show" the issue pretty well). I don't think it has anything to do with warm up. I already chatted with Apple Support and they only recommended software solutions. Didn't want to try those and checked if anything could make the popping noise on my Macbook.

I might have found the source:

The screen / screen hinge. If I press on the in the middle of the screens backplate near the screen hinge (close to or on the edge) I hear a very similar popping sound. Works in opened and closed position.

Please check if this could be the source on your Macbook too and reply to this comment.

Hello titfromisere,

I have the exact problem as yours. Please let me know what did you do.

2 Issues:

1: click sound during working with the laptop like 2 to 3 times per 5 hours of usage.

2: CLAC sound when opening the laptop. If I try to recheck it immediately once again, there won't be any sound. But opening the laptop after 15 to 30 minutes causes the CLAC sound again.

Please let me know what I should do.

Regards,

SNathan94.

So after a year or so and my 3rd replacement.... it's starting to pop again. This is getting out of control! On top of the popping the last hardware replacement has caused my iCloud Photos to stop syncing and crash constantly on this machine. I'm getting really frustrated that I've spent so much money on this BTO MBP and it has been giving me more problems than any of my older macs combined over the years.

I took mine in after having the Apple Store order the parts (it took more than 10 days to get them in). After 3 days the top case and screen were replaced. I got it back home and after about a week, the popping came back as before.

So now I need to lose more editing time waiting for it to get "fixed" again - if they will take it in again (oh they better take it again).

I am really missing my 2015 model 15" MBP these days.

Hi , i have a MBP 15'' with touch bar , top specs.

Last year i had the widely known problem with the popping sound. I went to my Local certified retailers( i live in Greece) and after the keyboard and screen replacement , the poppoing sound disappeared, UNTIL now. But now i am out of warranty. My macbook is in PERFECT condition, i even use a silicone keyboard cover, and sometimes for longer use, i use an external keyboard and mouse to maintain the good condition of the mac.

I am very disappointed and and i dont know what to do, the sound irritates me so much. The service will cost me around 1k and i bought it for 3.4k!!!

So the question is , is there any way to get my MBP fixed without paying ? It is a production problem that they didnt repair it permantly and now i am out of warranty.

Getting the pop sound, losing one new keyboard key every second week, and just growing more tired of Apple milking the juice. I get a dejavu from thinking "How could Microsoft get things so f*ckedup with that markedlead... seams to be a common thing. This was the last apple product i bought. Left iphone and ipad 4-5 years ago, now im setting my self free from the computer prison as well.

See you on the other side 🙂

I had the popping sound issue a few months after buying my MacBook Pro.

Some other issued appeared the meanwhile (maybe related or non related): clicking sound at the mouse level upping opening the screen when cold, a loose part sound when moving the computer from side to side, some sticky keyboard keys when the computer gets really warm (mainly "E, R", "U, I", and Caps Lock keys), and a distorted right speaker sound.

The equipment was serviced last week and they changed the top case and display assembly and everything has been working perfectly for the last 4 days.: no popping, no clicking, no stickiness.

Let's hope everything remains that way!

The issue you are facing is little different version @The_originalsam.

There seems to be one kind where popping sound comes from near the speakers sometimes from left and sometimes right but not exactly from the speakers and its a actual hardware sound.

I had this problem before and got it resolved when Apple changed the logic board and the display panel.

However, now I do notice some popping soung from speakers. This happens when your computer is quiet, plays a notification, or plays any song, and goes back to quiet mode again. Its like switching off or disconnecting the speakers department of the circuit.
I hope this 'switch mechanism from state of on mode to off mode' is not transitioning smoothly leading to that noise/popping sound. And as the sound channel changes from speakers to headphone when you plug one, you are not noticing that issue.

Feels like this is the reason..

I have an early-2015 MBPro.

After installing High Sierra a few weeks ago, the speaker popping started and has gotten worse despite talking with senior advisors at Apple and reinstalling HS.

Also, now the laptop freezes up randomly and does other odd things since installing HS.

Has to be a software issue. Still trying to get it resolved but the replies I'm seeing here suggest there's no solution even with a new device.

One advisor said it was hardware and to take it to the AS near me. I say they're wrong. This is software-based.
