Popping Sound, MBP 2016

I have heard a strange noice from my MBP, and am not sure if this is expected or not. Model is MacBook Pro 2016 with Touchbar, 15 inch, Radeon Pro 460, 2.9GhZ i7, 2TB SSD.

The sound occurs rarely, there may be several days or more straight that I don't hear it, though when it occurs, it may happen 2-3 times in a half hour period. There is no association I can make with what I'm doing at the time, so I'm unable to recreate it. The sound is a single hollow "popping" noise, similar to if you slowly squeeze a plastic bottle until it crinkles. The sound is not very loud, but clearly audible, and sounds as if it is coming from approximately behind the trackpad. I've had no other notable problems with this computer to date, have made no modifications to any hardware, or used it in any abnormal way.

I'm not terribly bothered by the sound itself, but I'm aware that the battery is located roughly behind the trackpad, and I worry that an expanding battery might sound like this. The case is not flexed or distorted in any way, there is no abnormal heat being generated, and no smoke, smells, or fumes. I think this is unlikely to be the cause, but is serious enough that I would like an alternative explanation before I disregard it. Alternate explanations might be abnormal activation of haptic feedback, or flexing of internal components as adhesives or seals continue to cure since manufacturing (laptop manufacture date 12-19-2016). The OS X battery status is "Good", "No errors", Simplo model bq20z451, battery manufacture date 12-2-2016.

Thanks for any help!

After numerous visits to the apple Service Centre I was able to convince them to replace my display. Got my laptop back today with a brand new display.

My initial tests confirm that replacing the display has fixed the popping sound issue.

I have also noticed that the new display does not make any noises when pressed against at the bottom of the screen. The new display feels more sturdy. Hopefully the issue won't reoccur again after extended usage. Fingers crossed!!

I urge everyone having this issue to be persistent and get the display replaced.

A big thanks to everyone who updated this thread, It was very helpful in getting the problem fixed!

Another update, since the repair I don't experience any more popping, I do however have another problem. After some extensive usage I noticed that the new topcase seems to be flawed, 8 keys have suddenly become "sticky" with a very high pitched sound when the computer gets warm, between 60-90 celsius. When the computer gets cooler this "stickiness" and annoying sound gradualy disappear.

Sigh... So basically I need to return my MBP as they probably need to yet again, change the entire top case to fix this.

Make sure they test all of the keys during a longer time of heavy tasks (60-90 degrees) after they exchange your topcase+display to ensure that everything is working correctly.

I have been with this issues for about six months until I decide to send it for a fix.

I had clacking sound when opening the laptop screen, also, random pops from the keyboard area.

I recorded videos that show all the issues and send it to Apple later with the Laptop.

Last week I got the Laptop back, and for now, all is good. No crazy pooping sounds.

I'm attaching a screenshot of the list of parts I got replaced.

Hope it help.

I bought my Macbook Pro around the end of this summer, and haven't had hardly any issues to date. The only thing I've noticed began about in September. I keep hearing this soft popping/clicking noise at random times, and I'm not sure what's causing it. It doesn't matter what I'm doing, it does it after long intervals fairly consistently... It only began happening after I put on a hardshell Incase brand case from Apple's website, so for now I'm hoping that it's just the sound of the case readjusting itself. If it gets worse, more frequent, or louder, I will take it in to an Apple store. For now, I can only hope it's not a sign of a hardware malfunction, this machine is practically brand new and in perfect condition (I am very gentle with my electronics).

Any sort of help would be appreciated. I'm very paranoid about this computer. 😕

My Macbook Pro 2016 with Touch Bar is having the same popping noise issue after upgrading to High Sierra. Earlier I though the sound is from the speakers but later on I figured out that noise is being heard from the hinges. Also there is some movement inside the laptop when we just move the laptop. I noticed the movement when i took the laptop from table and trying to put that inside my backpack. Strange movement, it's like something is loose inside the laptop. Apple let me know if the issues with these laptops. I bought the newer version with high expectations and am here only left with disappointment. Also i do not have an apple store in my country(India)/near to my home town. Kindly assist me for a fix.!

I have the same issue (mbp late 2016 15 touchb). The CLAC CLAC are pretty annoying — I have a baby sleeping next to me and he doesn't like the popping sound too ))

Since we do not have official Apple Store and support in Ukraine -- I took my mbp to the unauthorized service and they said that this is a hinge defect. they cannot fix it ((((

Good for you!

I have MBP 2017 15 with touchbar, having the same issue. Now it happens more often as probably the weather is colder. I sent my macbook to service on 27 Oct 2017, and in the invoice the predicted cost is for display assembly change.

I was so when I read it. I believe they already notice this issue but they don’t want to recognize it as their own failure.

However today 28 Oct, they called me. They explain that this issue is NOT unexpected. So it’s not designed to produce the sound but because of the design, it will happen.

They said changing my display assembly will hit or miss, it won’t guarantee that the sound will be gone completely. Thus, they don’t do anything to my macbook.

They assured me that it won’t harm my computer at all.

I am so disappointed of Apple. Paid so much for thing that is ill designed. And now they act like it was designed like that. What a joke! Year of embarrassment for Apple.

There is absolutely no way I would allow them to get away with that, and neither should you. "Not unexpected" by whom? It certainly IS unexpected by the purchaser, as I've never encountered anyone who said "this thing pops like a firecracker every time it heats up and cools down, but I'm gonna drop a few grand on it anyway, what the ****." PLEASE. Furthermore, can you imagine an auto mechanic refusing to replace your faulty spark plugs just because the new plugs MIGHT also be faulty?

I think you should escalate the issue, call AppleCare directly on the phone and make it clear that they have a problem until you don't.

Don't settle for this bullsh**.

Hey

I have had the same problem, this is my forth MacBook Pro 2017 model that has done this and every time I go to the apple store and they refund. But I spec my computer to the max so they don't have them in store and everything I have to wait 1-2 weeks to get a new one. Im a student and this has really effected my work flow in school, I do have a iMac 27" but I need a laptop in class. My computers' speaker just popped as I am typing this,😡 I have thought about getting a 2015 model just so I can finish school. Im so done with going to the apple store is at least an hour away from where I live and I have better things to. Im glade it s happening to more people and not just me, you would think a computer that costs about 5k would work for at least a year.

I have the exact same issue, and also found it to be the bottom middle of the screen. If I push it lightly from the back in this spot I can reproduce the 'pop' noice. There must be some glue that has come undone with heat as the laptop is used. It pops multiple times a day on its own without me touching that part of the screen. So annoying. Any ideas how to fix? My Macbook Pro 13" with TouchBar is now 3 weeks over the 1yr warranty 😟

Exact same as mine. I push on the backside of the display behind the Macbook Pro logo and I can hear it creak and pop..not sometimes, without fail. And its getting work...like the layers are progressively coming more apart. Also the random pops are louder and more frequent.....

I have to now deal with the AppleCare people, as mentioned before, I was a day or two over my 1yr before logging a ticket, and at the Genius Bar they told me I'm out of luck......

Just want to share that I got my 15" MBP TB 2017 serviced for the popping sound as well as the issues with the keyboard and some issues with the screen.

The popping sound is completely fixed. I have not experienced it since I got the computer back about a month ago, whereas before it would happen 3-4 times during my workday.

The keyboard has been working fine, but then again it worked fine for like 5 months after I got the computer so only time will tell if it keeps working.

The screen was displaying very faint horizontal lines only visible when looking at solid colors. This was fixed by replacing the entire screen but I still experience another issue, when the computer starts getting hot, something will happen and the entire screen changes color/tint in the split of a second. I'm looking at a solid white image, the image will look pink abruptly turn slightly pink and then gradually go back to white over the next few minutes. It's like the logic board starts flexing when it heats up and it causes a cable to short or something.

I'll be taking it back in to have this issue looked at but aside from that everything else is great.

Few days back I received my Macbook after a repair with a sheet saying that they 'replaced the display panel and now it passes all the hardware checks'

However, after using for somedays, I realized that popping sound is still there, though not as frequent like before. Yesterday, I went to Apple Genius store and asked them to look into the issue. They took a lot of information from me like : When does it usually occurs, how frequent, from where exactly the sound seems to be coming from and all. I wish they will be able to replicate and find out what exactly the problem is. I still don't understand how changing the display panel would fix popping sound that is coming right near the speakers: sometimes right side and sometimes left.
