windows 10: iris graphic 5100 not compatible

I am trying to upgrade from win8.1 to win10.

I am following “Perform an upgrade install of Windows 10” from this page https://support.apple.com/en-nz/HT204990

I get the following error during installation:

“Intel Iris 5100 was not compatible with windows 10”

In osX, I have updated to sierra and there are currently no further updates to install

In Windows, I have installed all available updates via ‘apple software update’

NB my mac mini is the "late 2014" model

How do I resolve this?

Hi again – do you know if this is guaranteed to work?

What I envisage may happen if I try this is that I install Win10, but then the BC6 drivers still don’t install (for the same reasons as they don’t work right now), and then I would be left with only being able to use generic drivers i.e. poor resolution

Did you install BC6 drivers after the W10 upgrade? Windows Update is providing bad drivers for your GPU.

hi - no, the W10 upgrade doesn't complete because of the error above. So I didn't install BC6 drivers afterwards.

You may want to disable the 5100 GPU, fall back to a generic VGA driver and update and then run BC6 drivers for W10.

The BC6 drivers are provided by Apple, not from Microsoft. You should not install WHQL drivers.

when I disable "Intel(R) Iris(TM) Graphics 5100" in the Device Manager, I still get the same error during the Win10 install.

If you uninstall the drivers and delete the device, and reboot, the 5100 GPU will come back. Can you verify that you have the Generic VGA driver in use when you try to upgrade?
