I turned on my computer today and iPhoto has been removed from my hard drive! Anyone else ?

When I turned on my computer today, I've found that iPhoto has been removed from my hard drive!! When I go to the App Store, it's not listed in my purchases and it's nowhere to be found in the store. Has anyone else had this happen to them?

I appreciated the ease of use and organization of iPhoto; I didn't appreciate Photos and being strong armed into cloud use while losing functionality. I specifically kept it on my older MacPro in my studio for simplicity and quick edits. I guess I can move the Masters folder to another external drive and create a new iPhoto library on my newer Mac that all my video production software is on; I'll just cut the wifi and make copies of iPhoto and vault it for safekeeping.

1. Nothig Apple does removes iPhoto from your machine. The update to 10.10.3 that adds Photos does not remove iPhoto. Both apps are left in place, as you are aware because you used Photos for some time before reverting to iPhoto. If iPhoto is gone from your machine you need to seek some other cause. You might want to do this as a matter of urgency, as who knows what else will disappear.

2. Photos does not require any use of the Cloud at all, so you're not strong-armed anywhere.

3. What version of iPhoto did you have?

I don't use iCloud with Photos. At least not iCloud Photo Library. And I only use Photo Stream and iCloud Photo Sharing for convenience. I can still import and sync the old fashioned way if I wish. And as for editing, the editing capabilities on Photos is much richer, and the best part is that it includes Extensions so you can open External Editors right in the Photos app. Makes editing using those tools far easier than either iPhoto or Aperture (both of which I still have as well).

Photos replaced iPhoto.

Nothing replaced Aperture.

But this replacement took place only in the Apple product line. Neither app is sold or developed any longer. However, both continue to run on current OSes, in their most current version.

The change did not happen with Yosemite. Development ceased on Aperture and iPhoto about a year before and the Photos app wasn't released until the third iteration of Yosemite - 10.10.3

No machine with an existing install of Aperture or iPhoto had anything replaced. They simply had Photos added to their suite of Applications. The move from iPhoto (or Aperture) to Photos is always a user choice.

The original poster has used both iPhoto and Photos, as he says. So, I'm not really sure why you're point is. In the meantime he or she has a serious issue on their machine - apps disappearing. Do you have anything to contribute to that?

The only thing that I can think of Larry is the crash I mentioned in iTunes. (Ever since I put in a 3.5 gig video card 9 months ago, I've been having problems with downloading and playing purchased HD content on iTunes (no problems with HD content I produce myself). It's a compliance issue with my old 30 inch Cinema Display). Other than that, I used it twice to work with software I use everyday.

I've since used a thumb drive to reinstall iPhoto from another household computer - I'm going to import from a backed up Masters folder and see how that goes,

If you remember when initially installing Yosemite, iPhoto would no longer open. It took over 4 months for Apple to have a version available that would work after much complaining from the community about Photos

I certainly do remember installing Yosemite and this is quite incorrect. iPhoto v9.6 ran from the get-go on Yosemite. I've no idea where you get this idea about four months. Flick back through this forum. Where's the 4 months of 'Why doesn't iPhoto work' posts? As continues to be the case, an up-to-date version of iPhoto was required and available. it was available prior to Yosemite being released.

And again, all of this has nothing to do with installing Yosemite. Photos only came along on version 10.10.3, several months after Yosemite was released.

I know a dozen or so photographers that stopped using Apple photo software when the Photos app came out - guess they saw the writing on the wall. I'm just a hobbyist as far as photography goes but Photos is even too dumbed down for me.

Anyone serious or pro photographer moved on with the demise of Aperture. Photos was never meant to be a replacement for that. Apple just left the Pro or serious hobbyist market to 3rd party developers.

You will certainly find Photos dumbed down if you're using the first version of it. The later versions with Sierra are much more powerful and capable. But from the get go Photos has been a much more powerful editor than iPhoto.

As background: I use LR as Photos did not meet my requirements.

Be honest, who do you know, who knows how, or wants to, or even in fact has. I know over 200 Mac users and not one uses iPhoto or even knows it is available anymore.

Are you serious? First of all the OP to whom you are addressing your responses (which are incorrect), clearly wants iPhoto. Secondly, it is not "available" to anyone. It is a past purchase which, if you had iPhoto 9.x or higher when you updated to Yosemite, and Photos was introduced, could be re-downloaded.

So, the number of Mac users that you know is really irrelevant.

I'm sorry - I said Yosemite when I meant Maverick - iPhoto didn't work at first and there was no update. After finding no help on the forums and a few folks with the same problem I went to an Apple Store and talked to a few people, I removed iPhoto to an external drive (just for backup) and restarted the computer with that drive off. I downloaded 9.4.3 and it worked.

So you found one thread where someone had a problem that was resolved by updating the app? I'm not saying that you didn't have the experience, I'm just saying that the idea that there was a 4 month period where iPhoto didn't work is inaccurate. You may not have figured it out at that time, but others did.
