iPhone 7 plus camera 2x Zoom Resolution

Hi, I do have a question about the digital Zoom on the iPhone 7 Plus.

As anyone know the iPhone uses the wide angle lens for 2x Zoom instead of the telephoto lens if there are bad conditions or bad lightning. So if the iPhone zooms in the 2x zoomed picture should have a lower resolution as a normal taken picture at 1x zoom. The normal resolution is 4032x3024 pixels => 12.xxx MP

But somehow a 2x zoomed picture shows up the same resolution (4032x3024) as a normal 1x taken picture in Fotos on the Macbook. How could that be? Its impossible that a zoomed in picture taken with the wide angle lens has the same resolution as a normal picture.

I imported the picture in Lightroom and it shows the same resolution.

I think that the camera somehow interpolates the pixels to its full resolution. Is that possible?

Does anyone have a proper answer to that phenomenon?
