update projects and events freezes

Just updated to 10.1.4 from 8.x (iMovie '09). I told it to 'update projects and events' upon launching for the first time and after a few minutes I got the spinning beach ball and in the force quit window it said 'application not responding'.

Is this something that needs a lot of time and will resolve itself, or do I need to do something housekeeping-woe to help it along?

Thanks in advance.

Did it update any of your projects before crashing? You are doing a very big update though I think it should work. However, if you have a lot of projects you may find problems with a few. What you can do is to update in steps by dividing projects (or groups of projects) and their associated events into separate projects and events folders. Only projects and events folders in the ~ / Movies folder or at the root level of an external drive will be 'seen' by iMovie 10. This way you can prevent a problem project interrupting the update of later projects.
