Apple Watch 2 - dead screen

my new watch screen went blank, no amount of button pressing would bring it back. It was charged as I am in the habit of putting it on charge overnight. Put it on charge again overnight with black screen still in the morning. As I was about to give up and put it away the apple logo appeared on the screen and it eventually came back to life. Then it started getting hot, in fact too hot to touch the back, screen eventually changed to showing time in top right with a red thermometer on the left until it went black again. Not happy, 2 days into a 90 day cruise and no watch.

If your watch has not yet restarted, try removing it from the charger and force restarting it: press and hold both the side button and Digital Crown for around 10 seconds, until you see the logo.

If that does not help, next try charging your watch again for around 2 hours, making sure that you follow the charging instructions here:

After that time, if it has not already restarted automatically, remove it from the charger and:

  • Try restarting it (by pressing and holding the side button until you see the Apple logo).
  • If necessary, next try force restarting it again.

Thanks for your suggestions. Not sure what happened but after several attempts at recharging and resetting it has come back to life. I will keep my fIngres crossed as I am on a 90 day cruise and taking it to an apple repair centre is not much of an option. I will keep you posted if anything untoward happens again. I have to say that it was a bit scary when the thing started getting hot for no obvious reason.

IT has kind of started working again but there are a number of issues that weren't there before.

1. I cannot get the watch to unlock from my phone (this worked fine before). I have restarted both several times and each device shows that the iPhone unlock function is set (ie green) but the watch will not unlock automatically when the iPhone is unlocked.

2. When I used to track an activity (walk in this case) it used to tap me at each km and by lifting the watch I could see a progress report - now it taps but not progress report. In fact to stop the tracking I have to unlock the watch manually before I can stop and save it.

I have re-paired and restarted each device multiple times ( single button, double button and draining the battery restarts on the watch) with the same result. As I am cruising on South America not much opportunity to go to an Apple Store for help.

appreciate any advice.
