apple tv gen 4 low sound when streaming airplay from laptop or iPad

Hi team,

Apple TV is connected to LG 55" Ultra HD TV and has Sony sound bar and subwoofer connected to TV through optical cable. When I airplay from laptop or iPad the sound is very low even when turned up to max. If I switch to playing music from the Apple TV from my iTunes library the sound is so loud that the windows in the house nearly shatter! The limit loud sounds option is off. I have tried using my iPad as a apple TV remote (as some on forums have suggested) but do not get any further volume option by doing this.

I am quite frustrated with this issue as this was the main function that I purchased the apple TV for. We only just bought the big screen TV as for the past few years we just watch content on the laptop or iPad as a family. We thought the big screen would make a difference just by air playing the content from our other devices but are being proven wrong so far! A lot of money wasted on new large TV and apple TV!

thanks for any and all help and have a great day

Hi. Two suggestions. Try changing the Apple TV audio output mode (Best, DD5.1, Stereo) to something compatible with your speakers. Movies use the center channel a lot, and if you don't have one, 5.1 sound can be very bad. Also, if you're using mirroring, not basic AirPlay, the volume control on the iPad or computer is involved. I leave mine on max for AirPlay to avoid confusion.

Thanks for those suggestions, I tried them. Have been fiddling around for a while now with different settings. Movies are still extremely low volume when airplay from iPad or Macbook pro. Is there a way that I can send the picture via airplay and use bluetooth or aux for the sound? This seems like a real bummer and is spoiling our movie viewing pleasure at the moment.

Thanks all

Yeh the games are fine, I have not tested an iTunes movie but youtube seems to be working fine now after I have tweaked around. I think in the end it is more a problem of the source rather than the apple TV.. although I am hoping to not have this problem with iTunes movies or much other content. I think maybe we are just noticing the sound difference with this set up really badly because usually if we all crowd around the laptop or iPad we are really close and low sound coming from a BT speaker seems ok.

Anyway thanks for your help, hopefully all onward and upward from here.
